Each November, a papermaker named Timothy Barrett gathers a group of friends and students on the grounds of the University of Iowa Research Park, a onetime tuberculosis sanitarium in Coralville, Iowa, for what he bills as a harvest event. Armed with hook-shaped knives, Barrett and his party hack away at a grove of bare, shrublike trees called kozo, a Japanese relative of the common mulberry. At his nearby studio, which is housed in the former sanitarium’s laundry facility, the bundles of cut kozo are steamed in a steel caldron to loosen the bark. After the bark is stripped from the kozo, it is hung on racks, where it shrivels to a crisp over a matter of days. Eventually the bark is rehydrated and sliced apart from its middle, “green” layer, and that layer, in turn, is sheared from the prized inner layer. It takes about a hundred pounds of harvested kozo trees to yield eight pounds of this “white bark,” from which Barrett will ultimately make a few hundred sheets of what connoisseurs consider to be some of the world’s most perfect paper.

Barrett, who is 61, has dedicated his life to unlocking the mysteries of paper, which he regards as both the elemental stuff of civilization and an endangered species in digital culture. For his range of paper-related activities, he received a $500,000 fellowship from the MacArthur Foundation in 2009. “Sometimes I worry about what a weird thing it is to be preoccupied with paper when there’s so much trouble in the world,” Barrett told me, “but then I think of how our whole culture is knitted together by paper, and it makes a kind of sense.” The Library of Congress and the Newberry Library in Chicago are among the institutions that often use his paper to mend their most important holdings, from illuminated manuscripts to musical scores penned by Mozart. In 1999, officials at the National Archives commissioned Barrett to fabricate paper on which to lay the fragile parchment originals of the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence. A visitor to Washington, Barrett said, would be unlikely to notice his paper resting beneath the founding charters. “But if you kind of turn your head sideways and squint, you can see it.”

I first met Barrett last winter, when I went to his studio to see him make washi, the lustrous, translucent, tissue-thin Japanese-style paper that is the fruit of his mulberry harvest. Washi, he told me, was a centuries-old winter vocation of Japanese rice farmers. A thermostat on a cinder-block wall read 50.2 degrees, and Barrett was wearing a thick long-sleeve undershirt, a flannel shirt and a down vest beneath his heavy apron. He makes washi only six weeks each year, and forms sheets of paper only on Thursdays. Much of the rest of the time he is preparing the white bark according to a regimen that includes cooking it in a solution of wood-ash lye, laboriously picking the strands free of tiny bits of debris, beating them with a mechanical stamping device, pounding them with mallets and then macerating the stringy clumps in a tub outfitted with S-shaped blades that he says are modeled on a medieval Japanese sword.

He stepped inside an 8-by-10-foot corner of the studio that was enclosed by curtains of plastic sheeting and scooped a few liters of wet white bark fibers into a vat of purified water. Then he poured in what he called a “formation agent” — plant secretions that, he said, were the key to the amazing strength, softness and flexibility of sheets no thicker than a Kleenex. He stirred the vat with a four-foot pole, then pushed and pulled the prongs of a huge, rakelike wooden tool through the solution to disperse the fibers evenly in the water. “A hundred and fifty strokes,” he said, though he didn’t appear to be counting. He stirred with the pole again and paused. Now he was ready to make a sheet of paper.

He took hold of a rectangular wooden frame, or mold, that had a bamboo mat and dipped it into the vat. He lifted it out, let excess water splash over the sides, then plunged it back in. He shook his arms rhythmically. Small waves formed on the surface. He might have been taken for someone at a washtub, though he swayed in a languid, trancelike manner. Finally, he bent his knees deeply, took one more pull out of the vat and quickly tossed the excess off. Nothing but a wet sheen was left on the mold. I thought that the process had, for some reason, failed to produce paper. But soon, from a corner of the frame, Barrett peeled off a pale yellow sheet, which resembled a large damp handkerchief. “People are always surprised when they see it for the first time,” he told me afterward. “It’s as though it comes out of nowhere.” By the end of the day he had a stack of 100 sheets or so, which he would drain overnight, clamp in a screw press and dry on a wall of steam-heated sheet metal the following day. The finished product was a rectangle of radiant simplicity, an unfancy, richly hued blank presence that was the predictable result, Barrett insisted, of selecting proper materials, preparing them in patient, time-honored ways and approaching their manufacture with a spirit of total dedication. “This is pretty much how it was done for 1,800 years,” he remarked. “By hand. One sheet at a time.”

The Leather Conservation Centre (LCC) in Northhampton, UK released some details of a new treatment for red rot. It reduces acidity and stabilizes the collagen molecules. Given the crushing number of red rotted bookbindings, and current lack of treatment options beyond surface consolidation, this is promising news. It will be interesting to keep an eye on this new product. At present, this treatment is only available at LCC and they are working out details of shipping, packaging, price, shelf life, and a name.

The names of two products they currently make are SC6000 and Selladerm.

How about Rotex for this new one? Or Tor-der? (get it? red-rot in reverse?)

Mostra: L'arte della legatura a Brera. Storie di libri e biblioteche. Il Settecento

A distanza di due anni, la Biblioteca Nazionale di Milano presenta una terza esposizione delle sue legature di pregio, a seguito del censimento condotto dallo studioso e bibliofilo Federico Macchi, che ha permesso di rilevare fino ad ora oltre 1500 legature di pregio. La dizione legatura di pregio indica ogni manufatto che presenti un particolare interesse sia per la qualità dell'esecuzione e della decorazione su materiali diversi, sia per l'importanza del committente e del destinatario. Le legature di pregio eseguite abitualmente, ma non necessariamente, su libri “importanti” per il contenuto, hanno sempre rappresentato un'eccezione nel panorama della legatoria d'ogni secolo, poiché la maggior parte dei volumi è stata rivestita con coperte, realizzate in pergamena o in pelle. L’esposizione, una delle rare interamente dedicata a questo periodo, presenta i volumi realizzati nel XVIII secolo: epoca della fondazione della Braidense (1786). La selezione è frutto di un’accurata indagine che ha analizzato tutte le collocazioni antiche della Biblioteca, come testimonia l’ampia varietà delle segnature dei manufatti selezionati. Da un gran numero di esemplari individuati sono esposti 141 volumi, collocati nelle vetrine seguendo un criterio geografico, distinti secondo l’area della manifattura e realizzati in Italia, Francia, Area nordica, Paesi Bassi. Sono presenti, inoltre, alcune legature di importanti legatori: si pensi al parigino Antoine-Michel Padeloup, allo spagnolo Pascal Carsi y Vidal, oppure al londinese Richard Wier. I restauratori egiziani chiedono aiuto per i libri bruciatiScritto da Sergio Calderale in notizie il 16/01/12Lo scorso dicembre, durante gli scontri tra polizia e manifestanti avvenuti in Egitto, si era sviluppato un incendio all’Institut d’Egypt, la più grande biblioteca egiziana, che ospitava circa 192 mila volumi. Di questi ne sono ora stati recuperati 54 mila, di cui purtroppo solo 21 mila si sono salvati senza riportare danni. Tremila sono andati distrutti completamente mentre quelli danneggiati sono stati trasportati presso i laboratori di restauro del National Library and Archives egiziano. Il direttore di questa biblioteca, Zein Abdel-Hady, ha fatto sapere che per il restauro saranno necessari dai 10 ai 13 anni di lavoro e il costo complessivo sarebbe di 450 milioni di sterline egiziane, vale a dire circa 60 milioni di euro. Nonostante le donazioni e i 300 restauratori al lavoro per 16 ore al giorno la NLA lamenta di non avere tutti i materiali necessari per il restauro.Anche in Italia i restauratori di libri in questo momento sono al lavoro, presso il laboratorio di restauro della Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze, anche se in questo caso i danni sono stati provocati dall’acqua invece che dal fuoco.Immagine | Robert Shadbolt

European Improved Damage Assessment of Parchment (IDAP) project

The Institute of Conservation's (Icon) Book and Paper Group would
like to present the next course in its 2012 Co-operative Training
Register (CTR) programme. In March 2012 members of the European
Improved Damage Assessment of Parchment (IDAP) project will present
their Parchment Analysis workshop at The National Archives, London.
We have worked closely with the Icon Science Group to bring this
course to the UK, which is usually available only in continental
Europe.

Over 4 days Dr. Rene Larsen, Dorte Vestergaard Poulsen and Kathleen
Muhlen Axelsson from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts School of
Conservation will equip participants with a wide range of assessment
techniques and a comprehensive methodology for the evaluation of
parchment and its degradation specifically through exposure to
moisture. Through both theoretical presentations and practical
experiments using microscopic analysis, delegates will be taught how
to identify and assess the condition of parchment and categorise its
degradation potential. This will also include tuition in IDAP data
recording methods.

The workshop is especially directed at providing conservators with
the tools and knowledge to manage and monitor their parchment
collections as well as the necessary assessment techniques to
predict future damage through exposure to a range of environmental
conditions. All participants will be given a copy of the IDAP help
file which provides clear and extensive information on parchment
type, assessment and deterioration and is an invaluable reference
document for anyone involved in the care of parchment items.

The workshop will be held between March 27-30, 2012 in the
conservation studio of the Collection Care Department at The
National Archives, London. The course language will be English.

Through the generosity of the Collection Care Department, we are
able to bring you this course at the heavily reduced rate of UKP450
for Icon members, UKP475 for non-members. This includes all
equipment and materials.

include: Dry cleaning, filling of losses, mending tears and
flattening. The storing and housing of parchment objects will

who have some prior experience in conservation.

conditions and disaster planning. In addition we will learn how
to construct simple protective wrappers.

historians, and others who work with paper artifacts, documents,
works of art on paper, etc. This is an introductory level course
for participants with little or no previous experience in
conservation

Iron gall inks

Iron gall ink, widely used in the past, is a significant factor
in the deterioration of paper documents and books. The use of
calcium phytate is one of the solutions adapted to combat this
phenomenon. A combined treatment with both calcium phytate and
gelatine seems particularly effective.

The focus of the class will be on learning how to prepare the
phytate solution and on its application to various objects. We
will also learn about the sizing procedures using gelatine.
Additionally this class will address issues involved in the
choice of adhesives suitable for the stabilization and repair of
damaged objects. The theoretical part will introduce students to
the various testing methods used prior to treatment and the
theoretical background concerning this treatment method. In the
practical part, we will practise various techniques of applying
the solution, immersion bath, suction table, etc. and
participants will also test and apply various adhesives like;
Isinglass, gelatin, Klucel in ethanol, etc. used for the
stabilization of damaged and perforated pages.

Participants can also create a sample collection which can be
used for future reference.

today.

Our technical equipment can only work as well as person who is
using it. In order to fully utilize the potential of your
equipment, it is essential to understand certain technical
aspects and the physics behind the technology involved. In this
class Manfred Meyer will share with us his vast experience and
expertise on this very exciting but often neglected subject.

The aim of the class will be on familiarizing ourselves with and
understanding the wide range of measuring devices, their

understanding the technology rather than having just "blind

in stabilizing and leaf casting on deteriorated and brittle
objects made from parchments.

The class will introduce and compare the various methods of leaf
casting parchments known in conservation today and will acquaint

will learn about a new modified recipe that is based on the
"Wouters recipe ", which has the advantage of being free of
formaldehyde and doesn't involve the expensive equipment that is
traditionally needed.

In the practical part of this course participants will learn
various application possibilities including applying the
suspension, either directly on the suction table or indirectly
by creating a loss repair piece that then gets attached to the
object in a second step. The colour matching of repairs will
also be covered in this course.

Although they are derived from the same raw materials leather
and parchment differ radically in their appearance, physical
properties, chemical characteristics and their responses to
environmental conditions. These differences significantly
affect the ways in which parchment and leather are used for
covering books so that alternative techniques and methods have
to be applied as part of the binding process. This course
considers traditional methods of manufacturing parchment and
vellum and reviews historical methods of using parchment as a
covering material especially limp-vellum styles of binding.
Preparation of text blocks and suitable choice of sewing
materials will be explained. Methods of attaching parchment
covers using primary sewing, tacketing or other means will be
explained. Practical aspects of the course will focus on
producing at least one example of book bound in limp vellum that
incorporates many if not all significant features of that style
of binding. The potential of limp vellum binding methods for
conservation purposes will be discussed.

understanding of how to produce marbled papers. Paper marbling
is a method of aqueous surface design, which can produce
patterns similar to smooth marble or other stone. The patterns
are the result of color floated on a viscous solution known as

an absorbent surface such as paper or fabric.

In this course we learn a variety of traditional patterns.
Participants are then invited to explore many new combinations

available that focus on the theory and practice of leather
bookbinding conservation. This course will be taught by a
specialist in the conservation of leather bindings with over 10+
years experience as a book conservator who has undertaken research
into the manufacture, deterioration and treatment of bookbinding
leather. Participants of both the theory and practical courses
will gain valuable knowledge and skills.

The leather book is covered with a complex material composed of
skin collagen, tanning agents and other chemicals while undergoing
certain physical processes during manufacture. All stages in
production are undertaken to produce the specific chemical and
physical properties required for leather suitable for bookbinding.
Familiarity with identifying the manufacture, types of leather
damage and its impact on the binding structure as well as the
suitability of current treatment options are important for the
conservator to better understand the conservation needs of any
leather bookbinding. Only with this knowledge can the conservator
make informed decisions on the conservation of any leather
bookbinding.

There are many reasons why conservators wash paper: to remove
dirt and adhesives, relax and flatten, reduce stains, and wash
away acids and other degradation products. This two day,
hands-on workshop will emphasize the practical aspects of
washing and drying both single sheets and bound textblocks. A
variety of washing techniques will be covered, including
blotter, float, slant-board, and full immersion of single sheets
and bound items. We will explore which techniques are best
suited to accomplishing various treatment goals, discuss the
pros and cons of different washing solutions and examine a
number of drying methods. Participants are encouraged to bring
(expendable) items of their own for treatment as well as
photographs of problem cases to discuss.

Outline of the course: Paper is mainly containing cellulose, which
has the ability to absorb and desorb water. The interaction between
cellulose and water influences the behaviour of the paper. During
paper production the choice of fibre material, the degree of beating
and the method of drying defines the characteristics of the paper
and its ability to absorb and desorb water.

During conservation treatment water is introduced into paper and
removed again. In this process chemical and physical changes in the
micro and macro structures of the paper are taking place. With the
aid of the didactical material compiled by Irene Bruckle and Gerhard
Banik in their project "Water and Paper", the principles of the
interaction of cellulose and water and the resulting behaviour of
paper in contact with water will be explained.

Various treatment methods of humidification and washing and drying
techniques - their advantages and disadvantages- will be
demonstrated and discussed. The gained understanding of the
principles will help to evaluate the chosen methods.

Conservation of Paper: Re-examining Workshop Habits

This two day course will be run in association with Tate Britain.

This course is designed to allow us to look again at some of the things that paper conservators do: dry cleaning, humidification, washing, bleaching, deacidification, enzyme use, pressing and flattening and more besides.

In 1968 Ed Ruscha made an editioned portfolio entitled Stains. It was composed of a variety of household liquids dropped onto the centres of sheets of office paper. Using this concept as a starting point, participants in this two-day course are encouraged to make two portfolios of their own. One will be filled with stains that will be preserved, the other will be of stains that are to be removed.

There will be a chance to make and use remoistenable tissue repairs for paper items that are too vulnerable to line in the conventional way.

Also we will look at the use of paper extract, and ways to dry wet books without needing to freeze dry them. The emphasis will be on trying to find ingenious ways to overcome problems. Most conservators have gaps in their knowledge. We hope that participants will enjoy explaining their own particular workshop habits, and listening to those of others.

Paper Through Time: Non-Destructive Analysis of 14th through 19th Century Papers - The University of Iowa: Historical papers vary considerably in their present-day condition for reasons that are not fully understood. This website shares the results of research on 1,578 paper specimens made between the fourteenth and the nineteenth centuries. The papers tested were selected from collections at the Newberry Library and The University of Iowa, and were analyzed using nondestructive instrumentation. The Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Kress Foundation, and The University of Iowa provided funding support.

The results of this 2007-10 project show that the oldest papers are often in the best condition, in part, we believe, because they contain high levels of gelatin and calcium. “People often wonder why in the digital age we should be concerned about paper stability,” says principal investigator Timothy Barrett. “Artifacts on paper often contain valuable information related to human history that is not accessible in a digital image. Not only do these artifacts need to be preserved for future generations, but paper copies that can be read without electronic hardware will continue to be essential backups to the digital record long into the future.” The results of this research will be of special interest to paper historians, paper and book conservators, and producers of archival papers. Biblioteca in Cina_ Li Xiaodong Atelier

Una piccola biblioteca per la lettura all'interno di un contesto naturale.

La scelta è stata quella di non costruire un nuovo edificio nel centro abitato del villaggio, ma di costruire la biblioteca in questo luogo particolare vicino alle montagne.

La scelta del materiale per il rivestimento dell'edificio, è stata fondamentale per il progetto. Dopo aver analizzato le caratteristiche dei materiali autoctoni del villaggio hanno scelto di utilizzare proprio il legname accatastato intorno ad ogni casa del villaggio.

Materiale ordinario usato in modo straordinario.

La ricerca della trasparenza nella carta ha radici profonde che vanno dalle carte impregnate di cera usate in Cina, già dal IX secolo, come supporto intermediario per realizzare una stampa a partire da un disegno, alle ricette di Cennino Cennini, nel Libro dell’Arte, in cui spiega come rendere trasparente una carta o una pergamena.
I risultati di queste ricerche, artigianali poi, dal 1850, industriali, prendono la forma di un supporto cartaceo conosciuto familiarmente con il nome di “carta da lucido” o piu’ semplicemente di “lucido” la cui caratteristica principale é la trasparenza parziale o la translucidità, che rende possibile il passaggio (trasmissione) della luce e delle immagini. Il lucido, generalmente usato come supporto intermediario, studio preparatorio, tappa di creazione o, piu’ raramente, come supporto definitivo di un’opera d’arte, permette di copiare, trasferire e corregge un disegno, un’idea o un progetto.
La carta da lucido é stata largamente usata da architetti, ingegneri, archeologi, geografi, gioiellieri, stilisti, artisti… che ci hanno lasciato un patrimonio culturale abbondante ed importante ma le cui condizioni di conservazione sono spesso precarie. Le ragioni di questa precarietà sono varie e vanno dallo statuto di questi documenti, spesso considerati come secondari a causa delle loro prima vocazione “utilitaria”, ai materiali constitutivi del supporto, dalla grande quantità di documenti prodotti al trattamento subito dalla cellulosa per ottenera la translucidità.
Oggi, la trasmissione e la divulgazione di questi documenti é diventata una priorità di varie istituzioni patrimoniali, questo solleva la problemática relativa allo stoccaggio, alla stabilizzazione ed alle condizioni di consultazione di questi disegni.
Il corso si rivolge a restauratori con almeno tre anni di esperienza nel campo del restauro della carta e dotati di cassetta degli attrezzi personali, possibilmente provvisti di alcuni disegni su lucido (dimensioni inferiori a 45 X 60 cm), diversamente verrà assegnato un disegno su cui lavorare.

• Identificare, esaminare e comprendere le alterazioni delle carte da lucido
• Indicare le soluzioni di stabilizzazione dei documenti e dei disegni su carta da lucido
• Realizzare gli interventi di restauro osservando i limiti del codice di deontologia, organizzando una chiara ed accurata documentazione ed accettando i limiti professionali
• Inserire il documento restaurato nel contesto istituzionale

I preziosi volumi del XV-XVII secolo dell'Archivio storico di Aulla, finiti sotto il fango, congelati nelle celle frigorifere fornite dalla Bofrost e della Mercafir

Visti così, conservati in quattro grandi freezer, in sacchetti rosa con l'etichetta che ne indica il contenuto, sembrano maxi scorte di surgelati. Invece sono preziosi volumi del XV-XVII secolo dell'Archivio storico di Aulla, finiti sotto il fango durante l'alluvione che ha colpito la Lunigiana il 25 ottobre scorso. Sono stati recuperati dalla melma da studenti e volontari, congelati nelle celle frigorifere fornite dalla Bofrost e della Mercafir, e ora una parte è nel laboratorio di restauro della Biblioteca Nazionale, nell'ex Convento di S. Ambrogio, per essere trattata. Il freddo ha trasformato i libri in pesanti blocchi di ghiaccio (anche 7 chili), ma li ha salvati. «Congelandoli si è fermato lo sviluppo di microrganismi» spiega Alessandro Sidoti, uno dei restauratori, aprendo i freezer e mostrando i quasi 300 libri conservati. Sono qui in attesa di essere liofilizzati e puliti.

In quello che sembra un forno da cucina, ma è un liofilizzatore che frutta basse temperature e pressione, vengono scongelati e asciugati: il ghiaccio sublima e il fango diventa una polvere finissima da spazzare via con un pennellino. «Questo metodo di asciugatura ha vari vantaggi: l'acqua rimane dov'è, il fango non penetra nella carta, non fa sciogliere la collatura, che quindi non migra verso l'esterno della pagina, evitando che si formino gore o che le pagine si incollino». In questo caso, per liofilizzare un volume ci vogliono anche dieci giorni, tanta è l'acqua che impregna le pagine. Per i libri di Aulla i danni sono stati, letteralmente, congelati. Non si può dire lo stesso, invece, per le opere della Nazionale, alluvionate nel '66 . «I nostri libri sono stati nell'acqua a lungo, il materiale è stato asciugato via via, ma mentre un libro veniva asciugato gli altri si danneggiavano ancora di più, molti poi sono stati essiccati ad alte temperature». Risultato: margini sfrangiati, copertine in cuoio abbrustolite, pagine appiccicate tra loro, “colla” addensata.

I libri però sono stati salvati e gli errori inevitabilmente commessi hanno insegnato molto su come trattare i volumi bagnati. «Non ultimo che i disastri si devono prevenire, per quanto è possibile» conclude Alessandro. La Biblioteca ora ha un piano di pronto intervento per affrontare i vari rischi a cui sono esposti i libri e ogni dipendente porta con sé un prezioso vademecum con le azioni da compiere in caso di emergenza. E' lo stesso che è stato mandato ad Aulla immediatamente dopo l'alluvione e che ha permesso di salvare molti volumi colpiti. «Il nostro lavoro sui libri alluvionati nel 1966 è stato ed è molto invasivo: il libro si scuce, si smonta, si lava poi si rattoppa, si ricuce e si rilega» commenta Gisella Guasti, che dirige il laboratorio dal 1995. «Per questo, sapendo quanto può essere distruttivo il restauro, cerchiamo di puntare sulla prevenzione, attraverso un piano che spiega cosa fare prima ma che prevede anche l’insegnamento delle azioni corrette da compiere per il dopo».

Information transmitted by Dr. Thomas Schuler , Chairman of the Disaster Relief Task Force (DRTF) of ICOM (since 2005). He was director of the Stadtmuseum Tübingen (1985 – 1992) and of the Schlossbergmuseum Chemnitz (1992 – 2004). He has specialized in Museum Management and Disaster Preparedness and Management. He was lecturer at the Museology Department of HTWK Leipzig and is regularly offering training courses for museum staff.

- The Sheik of the Sharjah Emirate and the French Government offered their assistance in reconstructing the building.
- 16 truck loads of (wet) books and manuscripts have been salvaged and moved to the National Library.
- The copy of "Déscription de l'Egypte" (one of eleven existing worldwide) is safe. Some volumes show damage to its covers, but can be restored.

1) What happened

The area near Tahrir square had been for days a “battle zone”. Ten people lost their lives there. Nearby is the Shura Council (Madschlis al-Schura), one of the two chambers of Egyptian Parliament. During the clashes a day earlier, parts of the parliament and a transportation authority office caught fire, but those blazes were put out quickly.

Some years ago, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA) has been taking the initiative in reviving the Institut d’Egypte. In order to preserve its collection and make it accessible to the public, BA has suggested nine projects for its revival, among which is a project of digitizing its entire collection. This will be the first attempt to digitize and publish a collection of such rarity and value.

Mohammed al-Sharbouni, director of the institute:
"The burning of such a rich building means a large part of Egyptian history has ended."
The building was managed by a local non-governmental organization.
Al-Sharbouni said most of the contents were destroyed in the fire that raged for more than 12 hours on Saturday. Firefighters flooded the building with water, adding to the damage.
William Kopycki, a regional field director with the Washington D.C.-based library said the body of work that was destroyed was essential for researchers of Egyptian history, Arabic studies and Egyptology.

The most accessible inventory at the moment for what was housed in the institute is in a 1920's book kept in the U.S. Library of Congress, according to William Kopycki, a regional field director with the Washington D.C.-based library. (AP)

4) Salvage Operations
Protesters tell of saving books from Institut d'Egypte fire:
Protesters began salvage operations on Saturday, as fighting continued around them, removing books and manuscripts from the building and arranging them on the pavement outside. They made contact with officials at the Ministry of Culture, who arranged to collect the works and remove to the safety of the Dar al-Kutub building on the Corniche. The first to enter the building and save documents did so while thefire was still raging.

The two-story historic institute near Tahrir Square, is now in danger of collapsing after the roof caved in. What remains inside the historic building near the site of the clashes are piles of burned furniture, twisted metal and crumbled walls. A double human chain of protesters surrounded the building Monday.

After having inspected the building complex Mohsen Seyed Ali (head of the Islamic and Coptic antiquities at the Ministry of Antiquities and Chairman of the archaeological committee in charge) said that the building is in good condition, stressing that although affected by the large incident in the building, but all the walls of the building were not damaged by the fire. The building must be repaired in the fastest time.The restoration of the building will cost (initially estimated) 2 million pounds and take about one year.

Sheikh Sultan Al Qassimi, Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah promised full restoration of the building complex. Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim, Minister of Antiquities stated that there is also an initiative of the French government to contribute to the restoration of the Academy and its contents, pointing out that he will tomorrow address the Sheikh Sultan Al Qassimi, Ruler of Sharjah and the French government to coordinate with them on implementation mechanisms for the restoration Academy.

6) Déscription de l'Egypte
The first edition usually consists of nine volumes of text, one volume with description of the plates and ten volumes of plates. Two additional volumes in Mammut size (also called Elephant plates) contain plates from Antiquites and Etat Moderne and finally one volume of map plates (Atlas), making for twenty-three volumes in all.
The typographical quality of the texts, the beauty of engravings, and the unusual formats (the Mammutfolio is 1m x .81m) makes Description de l'Égypte an exceptional work.

At least 11 copies of the manuscript worldwide are preserved. Culture Minister Shaker Abdel Hamid said on Monday that Egypt has three first edition copies of Napoleon’s "Déscription de l'Egypte": "There is one at the Dar al-Kotob, another at the Egyptian Geographic Society and a third incomplete copy at Assiut University."

Zein Abdel-Hady, who runs the country's main library, is leading the effort to try and save what's left of the charred manuscripts.
"This is equal to the burning of Galileo's books," Abdel-Hady said, referring to the Italian scientist whose work proposing that the earth revolved around the sun was believed to have been burned in protest in the 17th century.
Below Abdel-Hady's office, dozens of people sifted through the mounds of debris brought to the library. A man in a surgical coat carried a pile of burned paper with his arms carefully spread, as if cradling a baby.
The rescuers used newspapers to cover some partially burned books. Bulky machines vacuum-packed delicate paper.
At least 16 truckloads with around 50,000 manuscripts, some damaged beyond repair, have been moved from the sidewalks outside the U.S. Embassy and the American University in Cairo, both near the burned institute, to the main library, Abdel-Hady said.
He told The Associated Press that there is no way of knowing what has been lost for good at this stage, but the material was worth tens of millions of dollars - and in many ways simply priceless.
"I haven't slept for two days, and I cried a lot yesterday. I do not like to see a book burned," he said. "The whole of Egypt is crying."

Lisa Anderson, president of the American University in Cairo (AUC) which has a campus near the institute, says the Dar al-Kutub, the National Library and Archives, is leading a rescue effort by scholars, library specialists, and archivists. AUC is providing student and faculty volunteers and supplies from its own rare books library. "It is impossible at this point to estimate what is lost, since some books and other materials were rescued by private individuals, and we do not know where they are," she says. "Presumably they will begin appearing, either delivered to the Dar al-Kutub or in the used books markets, over the next weeks and months."
Anderson called the event "a terrible tragedy for the historiography of Egypt," adding that "the response of the scientific and scholarly community has been very heartening."

Bernard Valero, the French minister of foreign affairs spokesperson, called the destruction a "cultural catastrophe" and urged the Egyptian government to begin an exhaustive and transparent investigation, in order to find and punish those responsible. He added that France would consider any request from Egypt to help rehabilitate the gutted institute.

Egyptian media said that more than 35,000 manuscripts and books had been rescued from the flames, although their condition remains unclear. Anderson expressed hope for the collection, which she characterized as "a wonderful, somewhat eccentric, irreplaceable archive of mostly 19th century history and geography - books, manuscripts, and maps."

As I am sure many of you have heard, the Institute D'Egypte was burned 2 days ago during the uprisings around Tahrir Square. The exterior of the building remains, but the interior is almost unrecognizable. This contained 35,000+ books,was the oldest scientific institute outside of Europe, and had the original Description D'Egypte.

The (somewhat) good news is the a number of books were saved. People from BOTH the army and the protesters helped in the recovery process.

The not so good news: folks restoring the books need lots of supplies. I have included the appeal below. Please pass on to your networks. All I have is a phone# for the person in Cairo aiding in the restoration efforts.

As you know lots of books were damaged and destroyed yesterday when the Institut d'Egypt was set on fire. The salvaged books have been handed over to the Dar al-Kutub, who are now organizing a rescue effort led by my amazing book conservator colleagues and involving DAK's staff... of conservators. We're getting a vacuum packing machine there to stop the development of any mo...ld. Here's a list of materials needed in large quantities. Please deliver to DAK Corniche. We are also ready to purchase them, but it would be great to get them delivered asap. One of the most important things is the bags-- we needed them to vacuum pack the books, so we need the bags used by food companies to vacuum pack food. It is extremely important to find a company which will sell or donate these bags in bulk.

La battaglia fra dimostranti e forze dell'ordine vicino alla sede dell'edificio. In un incendio distrutti preziosi documenti e manoscritti risalenti alla spedizione napoleonica del 1798. Il ministro della Cultura: "Una catastrofe per la scienza"
Alcuni dei volumi danneggiati dall'incendio, scoppiato all'Istituto d'Egitto vicino a Piazza Tahrir (ap)
IL CAIRO - Un patrimonio storico e culturale inestimabile rischia di sparire al Cairo, teatro di nuovi, pesanti scontri 1negli ultimi giorni. Si tratta di testi e manoscritti antichi, andati già parzialmente distrutti, a causa di un incendio divampato per quasi 24 ore nell'Istituto d'Egitto: una preziosa eredità della spedizione napoleonica del 1798 nel paese delle Piramidi. L'edificio, parzialmente diroccato, sembra sull'orlo del crollo, e decine di giovani sono al lavoro, rischiando la vita, per mettere in salvo volumi e mappe antiche.

Workshop

Parchment is one of the oldest and also most durable writing materials. To be able to secure its proper preservation or eventual conservation it is very important to understand its complicated structure and way of the behavior. Experiments with practical parchment making can help to learn more about parchment in medieval manuscripts and even more to recognize different types of imperfection and defects coming already from its production so they are misunderstood with damage coming from later use and way of storage of the manuscripts.
Structure of the course

Practical parchment making workshop which will cover all basic steps in the parchment making: dehairing, cleaning of the flesh side, stretching on the frames, dry shaving and pouncing, final surface treatment, preparation for writing of the manuscript.
Theoretical lectures about the history of the parchment-making and different types of the parchments for writing purposes and the way of their preparation.
Lectures about the visual examination of the parchment in the medieval manuscripts and interpretation of their damage and imperfection coming from the manufacture of the parchment (based on personal experience of this parchment-making course)
Practical visual examinationtion and identification of different damage in real historical manuscripts. Duration of course 5 days of theoretical lectures (morning) and practical parchment making (afternoon) will include at least half day of excursion to nearby archive or library where would be possible to study historical parchment material.

Course is designed for the conservators of parchment who have already some knowledge about parchment and good practical experience with its conservation and want to learn more about writing parchment made for medieval manuscripts. But the course could be also found interesting for codicologists or curators of manuscript collection. The course main target is to understand the parchment and not parchment conservation. On another hand certain discussion about conservation of parchment will be raised by understanding of its special characteristics and behavior which come from the way in which is produced.

The course language will be English. The deadline for application is one mounth before the course starts. The course fee plus accommodation (4 nights) is 700.00 € plus 10% VAT. The number of participants is restricted to 7. »»» Registration

Lois Olcott Price

The Brodsky Series for the Advancement of Library Conservation was pleased to present Lois Olcott Price from the Winterthur Museum of the University of Delaware as its speaker on Friday, October 28nd at 4 p.m. Because architectural drawings are not created as an end in themselves, but as graphic documents to construct a building, sell a project or explore a design concept, the materials and techniques chosen by the drafter are particular to the function of the drawing as well as the period in which it was created. The interpretation and preservation of architectural drawings depends upon an understanding of their functions in architectural practice and on a working knowledge of drafting materials and techniques. This lecture will include tracing the use of supports, media and photo-reproductive processes used to create architectural drawings in the 18th to 20th centuries
The Workshop

This workshop emphasized the identification and understanding of materials and processes, and participants will have the opportunity to examine samples and ask questions. Building from this understanding of materials and using the available examples, we will also discuss housing and treatment options for these collections.

The workshop was attended by 14 students ranging in abilities from professionals drawn from regional libraries to first timers drawn from Syracuse University's iSchool and Museum Studies programs.

Il Pianeta Carta nel III Millennio II° edizione. Le origini marchigiane la Carta e Fabriano

Il Museo Nazionale delle Arti e Tradizioni Popolari che già in passato ha presentato a cura del CeSMA la prima edizione della mostra promuove questa II° edizione questa volta con carattere prettamente marchigiano.
L’esposizione, concepita in due sezioni strettamente correlate, una storica propedeutica ed una contemporanea vuole portare all’attenzione del visitatore la CARTA, ed in questa occasione quella di Fabriano, quale protagonista principale, unica ed insostituibile nelle varie forme.
La sezione storica presenta alcuni documenti relativi al passaggio dall’uso della pergamena alla carta ed a seguire la carta per scrittura e stampa (dalla scrittura manuale a quella digitale); la filigrana (quale elemento di sicurezza e per riproduzioni artistiche);la carta per usi artistici (matita, carboncino, acquarello, tempera, incisioni, acquerelli); la carta per le banconote ed i valori .
Il percorso espositivo accompagnato da un ricco apparato iconografico espone una cospicua parte di materiali provenienti dal Museo della Carta e della Filigrana di Fabriano.
Curatori: Sandro Farroni e Venanzio Governatori.
Il nucleo contemporaneo, a cura di Stefania Severi, attraversa la seconda metà del XIX secolo fino ai giorni nostri, partendo da tre presenze ampiamente storicizzate: Guelfo; Sante Monachesi e Wladimiro Tulli.
Molti altri i nomi presenti nell’esposizione Eros Donnini, Renzo Barbarossa, Bruno d’Arcevia, Maurizio Meldolesi, Riccardo Piccardoni, Mario Sasso, Sandro Trotti Valeriano Trubbiani etc. che hanno scelto la CARTA per le loro opere.

Nell’ambito della mostra martedì 29 novembre a partire dalle ore 10.00 nella Sala Conferenze si terrà una giornata di studio dedicata alla Carta di Fabriano interverranno oltre al Direttore ad interim dell’Istituto Centrale per la Demoetnoantropologia dott.ssa Daniela Porro,la Dott.ssa Antonella Fusco Direttore del Gabinetto Nazionale delle stampe la dott.ssa Maria Cristina Misiti direttore dell’Istituto per la Patologia del Libro, Franco Moschini Presidente del CeSMa, Sandro Farroni esperto di carta moneta, Stefania Severi, gli incisori Eros Donnini e Roberto Stelluti, Sante Martinelli tipografo “vecchia maniera”. Saranno tenute delle dimostrazioni sulla fabbricazione della carta. La giornata si concluderà con un assaggio di prodotti tipici marchigiani.

Cari amici come forse avrete sentito dai telegiornali la biblioteca, l'archviio storico comunale e l'archivio notarile di Aulla sono stati travolti dal fango. La situazione è ovviamente disastrosa, manca l'acqua la corrente e i volontari stanno facendo il possibile, le istituzioni hanno preso in carico la situazione e ci si sta muovendo insieme alla protezione civile e le soprintendenze per proseguire con i lavori.
Purtroppo servirebbero volontari "esperti" per lavorare al meglio.
Se qualcuno è già in zona e volesse partecipare alle operazioni di salvataggio mi scriva a alesido@gmail.com e cercherò di metterlo in contatto con l'unità di crisi della protezione civile per poter aiutare. Al momento sarebbe importante che si muovessero soprattutto quelli più in zona in maniera da non dover pesare sulle struttura ricettive presenti in zona.

Position Description: Reporting to the Head, Preservation
Department, the Conservator provides leadership and strategic
direction for the Conservation Unit in the conservation treatment of
circulating and special collections materials. The Conservator
provides technical expertise and professional advice and education
to the staff, other institutions, and the public. The incumbent:

Executes complex conservation treatments on paper-based library
and archival materials, working closely and collaboratively with
subject specialists, Special Collections staff and others to
establish goals, select and prioritize materials, and design and
implement plans;

Manages the Conservation Lab and program and identifies
programmatic needs and sets priorities;

Collaborates with the University of Iowa Center for the Book in
teaching classes in bookbinding and on other aspects of the
evolving book studies program at the University;

Establishes specifications and procedures for work performed,
developing workflow patterns and ensuring the quality of
completed work;

Assesses condition of material for a variety of digitization and
other projects;

Directly supervises 3.2 FTE staff members, and additional
students and volunteers performing a wide range of conservation
treatments and activities;

Serves as a resource for staff and the public on a wide range of
conservation issues;

Assists in staff education and in the planning and development
of the overall preservation program for the Library; and,

Conducts research on conservation treatment methods as needed.

Required Qualifications:

High level of expertise in book conservation achieved through an
accredited advanced degree in book conservation, equivalent
certificate program, or formal apprenticeship.

Minimum of 6 years professional experience in rare books and
paper conservation.

Demonstrated expertise in performing complex conservation
treatments on a broad range of library and archival materials.

Thorough knowledge of the history of book structure;
bookbinding, printing, writing, and papermaking materials and
techniques; and materials science.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to train and supervise staff, assess their
work, plan, organize, and direct work flow, and plan and
organize physical space.

Working knowledge of disaster planning, response, and recovery.

A record of engagement with professional conservation
organizations.

Knowledge of conservation issues and current trends at the
national level.

Experience providing instruction in bookbinding and other
aspects of book studies.

Demonstrated commitment to diversity in the workplace or
community.

Display continuing achievement, particularly at a national
level, in an area or areas of professional interest that will
enhance his/her value to the Libraries, the University, the
profession, or the scholarly community.

Desired Qualifications:

Demonstrated knowledge of history of photography and the

The Conservation Unit: The Conservation unit

founded by Bill Anthony in 1985, operates from a 2000 square foot

1. Sabato 8 Ottobre 2011 dalle ore 9 alle 13 si terrà presso la Biblioteca e Archivi Storici 'A. Mai' di Bergamo una simulazione delle modalità di intervento sui beni culturali in caso di eventi calamitosi che colpiscano la sede di una biblioteca, di un archivio o di un museo.
2. Si tratta della prima esercitazione bergamasca e della quarta dimostrazione pubblica in Lombardia, dopo quella di Brescia del 2009 e le due milanesi, avvenute all'Archivio Storico Civico e Biblioteca Trivulziana sabato 8 maggio 2010 e all'Archivio di Stato sabato 2 aprile 2011.
3. L'evento, promosso dal gruppo di lavoro interistituzionale "Emergenza in biblioteche e archivi" e coordinato dalla Soprintendenza Beni Librari della Regione Lombardia con il Comune di Bergamo, coinvolge direttamente la sede e lo staff della Biblioteca Civica e Archivi Storici 'A. Mai', con il supporto dell'Ufficio Protezione Civile, dell'Ufficio Sicurezza Luoghi di Lavoro, della Polizia Locale, della Questura, della Prefettura, del 118 e dei Vigili del Fuoco di Bergamo. All'esercitazione parteciperà il gruppo comunale dei volontari di Protezione Civile del Comune di Bergamo, preparato attraverso un programma specifico di formazione e di addestramento di volontari sui beni culturali.
4. In vista di questa demo, tra maggio e settembre sono stati organizzati tre differenti percorsi formativi, rivolti al personale responsabile di istituti culturali della città (Eupolis), al personale della Biblioteca A. Mai (membri del gruppo interistituzionale "Emergenza in biblioteche e archivi" della Soprintendenza Beni Librari di Regione Lombardia) e ai volontari di Protezione Civile del Comune di Bergamo (Adalberto Biasiotti, esperto Unesco).
5. Scopo di questa esercitazione è quello di consolidare e migliorare le metodologie e gli interventi operativi già sperimentati nelle precedenti simulazioni, ponendo l'attenzione in modo particolare su tre 'focus':
a. tipologia e caratteristiche dell'istituto, con particolare attenzione alla collocazione della biblioteca nel centro storico della città e alle modalità di accesso per i volontari e i mezzi di emergenza;
b. affinamento delle tecniche di recupero e salvaguardia per le diverse tipologie dei beni culturali conservati, che spaziano dai libri alle riviste, dagli archivi alle fotografie, dai busti alle monete, dagli strumenti musicali ai quadri, dalle stampe ai manoscritti;
c. presentazione del "kit" d'emergenza, di cui dovrebbero dotarsi, in via preventiva, tutti gli istituti che conservano patrimonio culturale mobile di pari genere.

SPIEGAZIONE DELL'EVENTO
Lo scenario di evento prevede che, durante la regolare apertura della biblioteca, si azioni il rilevatore di fumo, a causa di un piccolo cortocircuito avvenuto in un magazzino posto al terzo piano dell'edificio, che provoca alcune fiammate (materiali parzialmente bruciati); la conseguente fuoriuscita di acqua dall'impianto antincendio bagna i materiali.
Dopo l'evacuazione di utenti e personale (prima la vita e dopo il patrimonio!) si attiverà la procedura di emergenza, con l'allertamento di soggetti interni ed esterni al Comune.
Quando i vigili del fuoco lo permetteranno, entrerà in azione il 118 per il recupero di un ferito all'interno del locale. Si procederà, poi, al recupero dei materiali da parte dei volontari della Protezione Civile, ai quali sarà affidato in particolare il trasferimento del materiale da salvare dalla scena del disastro al luogo di raccolta, imballaggio e primo trattamento: Piazza Vecchia che, blindatissima ai non addetti, farà da splendida cornice all'operazione. Si prevede l'allestimento di un'area triage davanti alla fontana del Contarini, dove bibliotecari, archivisti e restauratori interverranno tempestivamente sui beni, che verranno fotografati e selezionati e, a seconda dello stato in cui si trovano (asciutti, bagnati, da asciugare entro 48 ore), verranno inviati negli appositi gazebo, dove esperti del settore li tratteranno opportunamente.
Al termine delle operazioni, nella Sala Giuristi del Palazzo della Ragione, restauratori ed esperti del settore mostreranno come agire sui materiali bagnati; verrà anche presentato il kit d'emergenza 'minimo' di cui ogni istituto culturale dovrebbe dotarsi per intervenire tempestivamente in caso di emergenza.

Saranno oggetto di recupero materiali di risulta, preventivamente bagnati e bruciati, recuperati e sistemati per l'occasione in scaffalature predisposte in un locale vuoto. Data la peculiarità dell'istituto, che conserva una variata tipologia di materiali, il materiale utilizzato per la simulazione spazierà dai libri ai documenti d'archivio, dalle monete agli strumenti musicali, dai quadri ai CD.

IMPORTANTE
Si precisa che i beni culturali originali, appartenenti al prezioso patrimonio storico della Biblioteca Mai, non saranno oggetto di intervento dell'esercitazione di sabato 8 ottobre. Verranno impiegati allo scopo solo materiali di risulta recuperati e sistemati per l'occasione in scaffalature predisposte in depositi reali, ma vuoti, al fine di creare uno scenario di simulazione verosimile significativo.

Harvard Art Museums, Straus Center for Conservation and Technical
Studies offers two to three fellowships at our new off-site facility
in Somerville, MA. The 10 month fellowships, with the possibility
of renewal for a second year, will be offered in either objects,
paintings, or paper conservation beginning September 1, 2012. The
Fellow will perform treatment and conduct research on works of art
in the Museums' collections. Please note that during this period
the Museums' will be planning and beginning implementation of the
move back to our new building in Cambridge. Collections movement
activities should be expected. There will be an emphasis on
treatment activities, and research activities will be limited to 10%
of the fellowship period.

The current pay rate is $1,200 bi-weekly and a modest
travel/research allowance is provided. Fellows are eligible for
Harvard University benefits, including contributory dental and
health insurance and access to University resources.

Eligibility: Applicants should be graduates of a recognized
conservation training program (master's degree) or have equivalent
experience; have a proven record of treatment and research; and
proficient English language skills (written and spoken).

The Papyrus Collection of the University of Michigan Library will host a two-week seminar in papyrus conservation, from Monday, June 18 to Friday, June 29, 2012, directed by Ms. Leyla Lau-Lamb. Participants will receive a hands-on introduction to papyrus conservation. They will learn about equipment and materials used in papyrus conservation and the theory and methodology behind current conservation techniques. They will then utilize these techniques to perform a range of treatment on actual papyri from the University of Michigan’s Papyrus Collection, including written documentation, digital photo-documentation, mechanical cleaning, damp treatments, reduction of folds, alignment of fibers, alignment of fragments, and methods of housing and storage.
The number of participants is limited to eight. Preference will be given to scholars and students who are directly involved with papyrus conservation, whether in the setting of a papyrus collection or archaeological excavations.
There is no course fee for the seminar, which is supported by the University of Michigan Papyrus Collection. Participants are responsible for their own travel, lodging and meals. Participants will have the option of purchasing the conservation tools they will use during the seminar. A certificate of participation will be provided at the end of the seminar.
Ms. Leyla Lau-Lamb is a senior conservator in the University of Michigan Library and has been conservator for the Michigan Papyrus Collection since 1990. Author of the Advanced Papyrological System (APIS) Guidelines for Conservation of Papyrus, she has been invited by various collections worldwide, including the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the Carlsberg Papyrus Collection of the University of Copenhagen, to assist in the conservation of papyrus.

L'Aquila, 15 set 2011 - Con la pubblicazione del relativo avviso sul sito istituzionale della Deputazione abruzzese di Storia Patria (www.storiapatriabruzzo.it) è stata indetta la selezione di sei candidati che potranno partecipare ad un corso avanzato per operatori del restauro di beni archivistici e librari. Si corona in tal modo la fase organizzativa di una iniziativa finanziata dall’Accademia dei Lincei con un Premio Feltrinelli Straordinario destinato ad un intervento in favore dei territori colpiti dal sisma del 6 aprile 2009.

Il corso, sia per la fase teorico-pratica che per un successivo periodo di addestramento lavorativo, si svolgerà a partire dal prossimo ottobre nel nuovo Laboratorio di restauro librario allestito presso l’Archivio di Stato dell’Aquila e la Deputazione di Storia Patria e interesserà materiale bibliografico ed archivistico danneggiato a seguito del disastroso evento tellurico, che verrà inaugurato il prossimo 23 settembre.

PER OPERATORI DEL RESTAURO DI BENI ARCHIVISTICI E LIBRARI

SELEZIONE DI N. 6 PARTECIPANTI

Nell’ambito delle attività previste dal Progetto REPAQ (Restauro del Patrimonio Archivistico e Librario dell’Aquila), attivato in seguito all’assegnazione da parte dell’Accademia dei Lincei di un Premio Feltrinelli Straordinario per un intervento in favore dei territori colpiti dal sisma del 6 aprile 2009, è indetta la selezione di n. 6 partecipanti ad un corso di aggiornamento professionale avanzato per operatori del restauro (operatori dell’area collaboratori restauratori).

I candidati dovranno aver conseguito un titolo culturale specifico in materia di restauro di beni librari e/o archivistici (corso universitario, corso impartito dall’ex Istituto di Patologia del Libro, master universitario, corso accademico, corso professionale regionale, titoli professionali e lavorativi) e dovranno risultare residenti nel territorio della Provincia dell’Aquila da almeno due anni. Saranno accettate con riserva e valutate esclusivamente per i posti eventualmente non assegnati a residenti nella provincia dell’Aquila, domande di partecipazione di candidati residenti, sempre da almeno due anni, in altre province abruzzesi.

L’attività formativa consisterà:

- in una fase intensiva di lezioni teoriche e tecnico-pratiche della durata di quattro settimane, (6 ore giorno) nel Laboratorio di Restauro istituito presso l’Archivio di Stato dell’Aquila nell’ambito del Progetto REPAQ;

- in una successiva fase di pratica professionale presso lo stesso Laboratorio con la effettuazione del restauro di unità archivistiche dell’Archivio di Stato e di altri materiali librari ed archivistici afferenti agli istituti culturali ricadenti nei comuni interessati dal sisma del 6 aprile 2009.

Nel periodo di durata complessiva del progetto, previsto in 24 mesi, agli operatori selezionati e partecipanti sarà corrisposta una borsa di studio di euro 10.000,00 cadauno, in due tranches, nelle fasi iniziali del corso di perfezionamento e del secondo anno di progetto.

L’aggiornamento professionale di cui sopra sarà a cura del personale docente e degli assistenti tecnici dell’Istituto Centrale per il Restauro e la Conservazione del Patrimonio Archivistico e Librario (ICRCPAL), sotto la supervisione del Direttore scientifico del Progetto REPAQ

This course is designed for librarians, archivists, antiquars, bookbinders, conservators, anyone else, who is interested in the topic.
The course is comprised of a theoretical and a practical training.
The knowledge about various Asian papers is gained via understanding of the raw material, the procedure of paper making in Asia and due to own fibre-preparation and paper-making in Asian style. The resulting self made samples form a valuable collection for comparing with paper to be identified. With simple methods, available to everyone for example Chinese, Japanese and Thai papers can be distinguished.
Films and a collection of samples support the oral lectures.

Preventive Conservation Voluntary Work Opportunity: Preventive Conservation Voluntary Work Opportunity

The Collection Care department at the British Library is pleased to announce that they will be offering a Preventive Conservation Voluntary Placement for three months starting in March 2012.

This opportunity has been created to further the aim of the British Library in the field of Preventive Conservation via the dissemination of key skills and techniques in this area. The successful individual will be given a unique learning opportunity in a working national library with a view to applying the skills and knowledge obtained in their own field of work. The volunteer will have the chance to learn and understand one of the core purposes of the British Library by working alongside Library employees and to gain knowledge, identify and manage risks to collections; identify best practice for handling material, disaster preparedness, integrated pest management, and creating and storing surrogate copies.

The volunteer will be reimbursed for reasonable expenses with a stipend of £5,000. Reasonable expenses will include reimbursement for flights, obtaining a visa, accommodation, and subsistence whilst in London.

(AGI) - Baghdad, 6 set. - L'Italia intensifica il suo impegno per la protezione del patrimonio culturale dell'Iraq, dove la Cooperazione italiana sta mettendo a punto gli ultimi dettagli per un programma di corsi avanzati sulla conservazione di libri, manoscritti, archivi e tavolette fittili cuneiformi.
L'iniziativa, partita nel 2012 a Erbil, nel Kurdistan iracheno, verra' guidata dall'Istituto per la conservazione e il restauro e rientra nel progetto "Assistenza tecnica per la riabilitazione e la gestione del patrimonio culturale iracheno", avviato la scorsa primavera con una copertura finanziaria di 2 milioni di euro. Il programma punta a fornire ai funzionari del board per le antichita' e il patrimonio iracheno una formazione specialistica su alcuni temi di conservazione e di restauro di materiali e monumenti archeologici. Alla fine di agosto, la task force italiana impegnata nel piano ha concluso un corso sul restauro degli avori antichi e l'ufficio consolare dell'ambasciata d'Italia a Baghdad ha premiato gli studenti migliori. Le autorita' governative locali - riferiscono fonti diplomatiche - hanno espresso soddisfazione per il progetto e confidano in ulteriori azioni nel settore scientifico e culturale. (AGI) .

Little has been written on the subject and I have had to conduct my own research which has been time consuming.

Named for the long stitches visible on the spine, the Longstitch binding, which involves sewing directly through the covering material, is an ancient bookbinding method that has become popular in Europe and America since the 1980’s, though it must be said that this style of binding has never died out completely."

Participants will become familiar with several types of basic repairs for bound circulating collections materials in school, public, and academic libraries. Tip-ins and basic page repairs, hinge tightening, and a variety of spine repairs will be covered. Techniques will be illustrated and demonstrated with text, images, and video. Links to other resources will be provided.

Repairs and conservation treatments on rare and special collections materials will NOT be discussed.
Who Should Attend?
Individuals with little (some preferred) book repair experience will benefit. More experienced attendees will receive helpful hints.

Presenters

Peter D. Verheyen is Head of Preservation and Conservation at Syracuse University. After beginning as work-study in preservation under John Dean at Johns Hopkins where he repaired and rehoused circulating collections, he studied binding and conservation in Germany and Switzerland to become a rare book conservator working in private practice and research library preservation programs. He established the conservation lab at Syracuse for the treatment of special collections materials, and developed a high-density system for storing architectural drawings. In response to a need for efficient rehousing in anticipation of off-site storage he introduced Syracuse to the shrink-wrapping of volumes. He presented Archival 101 as an ALCTS webinar during Preservation Week 2010.

Marianne Hanley is Assistant Conservator in the Department of Preservation and Conservation at Syracuse University Library. Her responsibilities include managing the repair and rehousing of our circulating collections, including the training of work-study students. In addition she is training in bookbinding and aspects of book conservation with conservators David Stokoe and Peter Verheyen. She also presents regularly on disaster preparedness as part of departmental staff training and outreach activities. Because Marianne has worked in both the public and private sectors of libraries, she is collaborating in the development of a basic book repair program that will benefit many different institutions and varying types of skill levels.

British Library Conservation Funded Internships - 2011/12

The British Library is pleased to offer two funded internships,
concentrating on book and paper conservation. The internships are
funded by the Garfield Weston Foundation and the Headley Trust and
will run between November 2011 and October 2012.

The internships are available to conservators who have limited work
experience in conservation and who wish to develop their practical,
hands-on conservation skills in one of the greatest research
libraries in the world. The successful candidates will have a book
or paper conservation qualification(s) (an MA in conservation would
be desirable) and will be selected on the basis of conservation
knowledge in relation to the projects available. Candidates will
also need to give examples of how they meet the essential criteria
for the internship.

Each internship has a bursary of UKP17k. The bursary will be paid on
a monthly basis and is subject to tax. The internships are open to
those who have the right to live and work in the UK.

The closing date for applications is Friday 30 September 2011 and
interviews will be held week commencing 10 October 2011.

a new University Library, Special Collections Centre and
Conservation Centre. The Glucksman Conservation Centre will be a
state-of-the-art facility for the conservation of the University's

INTRODUCTION

There are three fundamental techniques of paring leather in bookbinding: using a paring knife, using a modified spokeshave and using a paring machine, such as the Fortuna, Schar-Fix or Brockman. Often various combinations of these methods are used. Learning how to pare leather not only requires learning the technique of using a knife or spokeshave, but also the skills of how to keep the knife or blade sharp. The Brockman or Scharf-Fix alleviates the need to learn how to sharpen, although some thrifty bookbinders do resharpen their double edge blades. These paring machines are best suited for making small, thin flat pieces of leather — generally for onlays, labels, quarter bindings — rather than achieving a long, gradual bevel necessary for rebacking or English style full leather bindings.

The Heritage Council of Ireland and Trinity College Library are
pleased to offer a nine-month internship in book and manuscript
conservation. The internship will be based at Trinity College
Library and will begin in November 2011.

The successful candidate will work under the supervision of the
Library's Keeper of Preservation and Conservation and will be
involved in every aspect of work carried out in the Conservation
Laboratory. The internship will be based around the conservation of
books and manuscripts from the Library's special collections, as
well as exhibitions preparation, and housing projects. The intern
will be encouraged to carry out a short research project on an
aspect of the collection, the subject of which will be determined
once the internship has begun.

Candidates should be recent graduates of a recognised book or paper
conservation training program (or have equivalent experience). The
applicant should be able to work with a degree of independence.

Stipend: Euro20,000 (subject to normal PRSI and PAYE deductions)

The deadline for applications is Friday 9 September 2011 and

Montefiascone Conservation Project – Study Programme 2011 » Study Programme 2011: "STUDY PROGRAMME 2011

The cost of the classes is £445 GBP UK ($700 US, 520 Euro) per week and includes all tuition (which is in English) and most materials. The Montefiascone project is a not-for-profit organisation, and all extra monies are used to finance the cataloguing and conservation and preservation of the collection. Week 1: July 25-29
Re-creating the Medieval Palette

This class will study the colours (made from rocks, minerals, metals, insects and plants) that were processed to produce the colours used by artists throughout the medieval era. The focus will mostly (though not exclusively) be on manuscript art (Islamic and European) and participants will re-create the colours using original recipes. Illustrated lectures, will address the history, geography, chemistry, iconography and conservation issues. Practical making and painting sessions will follow these lectures.

Reconstructing an early medieval Islamic Book Structure

Lectures on the early history of Islamic bookbinding by Sheila Blair and Jonathan Bloom:

The course will offer the opportunity of reconstructing a model of the so-called “box binding” – the earliest known Islamic book binding structure (8th-12th century AD). Many unique fragments of this structure are preserved – mainly in Yemen and Tunisia, and also in a number of important collections elsewhere. The binding style has until now, only been associated with the Qur’anic (Koranic) text, and no known historic treatises describe such a structure. For this reason, the reconstruction of this bookbinding is based on the published examples, and on the direct study of the Yemeni collection. Analysing different features and variations of the Yemeni fragments, participants will reconstruct one binding incorporating the most common features.

Participants will be provided with basic textblock and wooden boards, will sew the textblock to the boards, construct the endbands using one or both of the historic examples, and finally, cover the book in leather. The cover will then be tooled (decorated). The model will be constructed using traditional materials and techniques. Participants will study the history of the study of this structure, the variations in its features, the strengths and weaknesses of the structure, and discuss the origins and developments of this intriguing binding as well as some puzzling features, still unexplained. Participants will be required to bring some basic hand tools (a list will be provided following registration). All materials will be provided at nominal cost. No previous experience of bookbinding is necessary to do the class and curators and custodians of collections are welcome to apply.

Week 3: August 8-12
Conservation Techniques for Islamic Binding

This workshop will provide an introduction to the specific considerations of conserving Islamic manuscript material. Through a series of focused sessions (including lectures by Dr Elaine Wright Curator of the Islamic collections at the Chester Beatty Library) and model-making, participants will examine individual components of Islamic book structures and discuss the ways they can be treated to best conserve them. Participants will examine the conservation of Islamic manuscript material – sewing and spine linings, end boards, board attachment and covering, as well as produce a model conservation structure for Islamic bindings. The result will reflect modern conservation techniques, and take account of best-suited materials and ethical considerations.

Week 4: August 15-19
Exploring the unique features of Spanish early modern account book bindings

Books created for accounting form a separate branch of the bookbinding craft, and these bindings can be found in archives and libraries all over the world. By the 16th century, a unique style of account book binding had developed in the Spanish peninsula, with elements including elaborate and colourful mozarabic or mudéjar geometric lacing as cover decoration, a substantial fore-edge flap, buttons of glass, ceramic, wood or leather, and loops of carefully twined leather.

The class will complete a 16th century account book model, based on examples featured in Spanish History of the Book texts. The case material will be parchment, the overbands tanned leather, and the lacing patterns will be done with a combination of tanned and tawed leather, with the option for cochineal-dyed tawed lacing. The binding will include button and loop closures, with a variety of button options. Some time will be spent each day examining accounting and bookkeeping history as related to book structures, with an emphasis on information from accounting instruction manuals of the time, and depictions of account books and accounting in art. We will examine conservation treatment of a stationer’s binding, and to discuss potential conservation problems and solutions. The Barbarigo Library of Montefiascone has fascinating examples of Italian stationary bindings, as well as many binding that draw on elements of the stationary binding tradition, such as paper and parchment bindings. Participants will have time to create sample cards for different button, loop, ticketing and lacing styles, in addition to the Spanish account book model.

Materials can be provided at a nominal cost and a list of hand tools required will be provided at registration. The class is designed to be fun and useful for the experienced binder/conservator and the interested but novice participant.

An electronic catalogue of the books in the Seminary Library is underway and work continues each year with a small team of volunteers, under the direction of Julianne Simpson (John Rylands University Library). There will be an opportunity to visit the library and learn more about its history, conservation, preservation and the cataloguing work.

About the Course Tutors:

Cheryl Porter has been Director of the Montefiascone Project since its inception in 1988. After graduating from Camberwell College (University of the Arts, London) she worked at University College London Paintings Analysis Unit, analysing the use of pigments in paintings and manuscripts. From 1992-2006 she worked as a freelance conservator, mostly for universities and learned institutions. She was Manager of Conservation and Preservation at the Dar al-Kutub (National Library and Archives of Egypt) and Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation 2007-2010 and is currently employed as a Consultant for a number of institutions with book, papyrus and manuscript collections in Egypt. She has published many articles concerning colour in manuscripts and has lectured in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and throughout Europe.

Marco di Bella graduated from the “European Course for conservators-restorers of book materials” in Spoleto, Italy and subsequently joined the Conservation survey and first aid for the incunabula collection of the Franciscan monastery library in Dubrovnik, Croatia. In 2003 he was first employed by the St Catherine Foundation-Camberwell College of Arts, London for the St Catherine’s Monastery Library Conservation Project. From 2004-2006 he worked as Assistant Consultant of the Social Fund for Development (Sana’a, Yemen Republic) for the project “Enhancement of the conservation capacities of the manuscript libraries of Sana’a, Tarim and Zabid”. During this time he was invited by UNESCO to give training courses on Islamic binding and conservation for conservators the Dar al-Makhtutat (house of the manuscripts) in Sana’a. In 2006 he was invited to join the Dar al-Kutub (National Library and Archives of Egypt) and Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation, where he is still involved. When he is not travelling abroad, he works as a book conservator at a number of conservation laboratories in Palermo, Italy. He has recently been appointed conservation consultant for the National Archive of Libya in Tripoly.

John Mumford is currently Head of Manuscript Conservation at the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation in Cairo, Egypt. He was formerly Head of Book Conservation at the British Library. John served a five-year apprenticeship at the British Museum and subsequently helped to establish the Rare and Early Book Conservation Studio at the British Library. In 1992 he was appointed Manager of the Oriental and India Office Book Conservation Studio, furthering his study of early Oriental and Eastern binding structures. In 1998 he became manager of the Oriental and Eastern Book Conservation Studio at the new British Library premises at St Pancras, London. He has frequently taught at Montefiacone and lectured and run workshops throughout the UK, Argentina, Patmos and many European locations.

Kristine Rose is the Senior Conservator at the Chester Beatty Library, Dublin and an accredited member of the Institute of Conservation. Her work has focussed on Islamic manuscript material for a number of years. Prior to this she worked at Cambridge University Library on a wide range of Western rare book material, though with particular interest in Islamic binding structures. She has a degree in Conservation from the Camberwell College of Arts and is a member of The Islamic Manuscript Association.

Dr Elaine Wright has been Curator of the Chester Beatty Library since early 1998. She holds an M.Phil and D.Phil from the Oriental Institute, Oxford University and is the author of a number of books including Islam,Faith, Art, Culture. Manuscripts of the Chester Beatty Library.

Chela Metzger recently started as Conservator for Library Collections at the Winterthur Museum of Delaware, and became part of the conservation faculty at the Winterthur/Delaware Program in Art Conservation. She taught book conservation at the University of Texas from 2001-2010, and previously worked as a project conservator at the Huntington Library in San Marino, California. She is a graduate of the North Bennet Street School bookbinding program, with a background in librarianship, and taught a graduate seminar for nine years on “The History of the Book” at the University of Texas. She has collaborated with colleagues in Latin America for many years, teaching in Argentina, Chile, Peru, Guatemala and Mexico. She has a long-standing interest in account book binding and has taught stationers’ binding workshops around the USA.

When sewing the textblock a binder frequently finds him/herself without enough length of thread to complete the work. What to do? Well, the binder must attach another length of thread to the end of the previous one so that he/she can continue uninterrupted.

The images below demonstrate one popular method of doing this (I’ve had to use it a lot). I don’t know what method Byzantine binders used—the sources do not say as far as I can tell, but I imagine it was not too different."

Course topics include: an introduction to preservation; the deterioration of paper, film, and electronic media; the building and environment; collections care; reformatting (digital and analog) and conservation treatment; disaster planning; and building a preservation program.

Session assignments are completed on a weekly basis. The 11 live webinars explore each of the course topics in depth and encourage an exchange of ideas. A class forum guides students who wish to pursue additional readings and provides an additional venue for class discussion as well as a help line between webinars.

This course is tailored to librarians, archivists, town clerks, curators, and collections or records managers who have (at least) part-time responsibility for preservation of historical or special collections or of primary research materials or who are interested in preservation training for professional development. Description: An introduction to the principles and practices of contemporary library preservation with an emphasis on building practical and well-balanced programs which promote the responsible stewardship of analog and digital collections. Topics to be covered include: the physical characteristics of library materials, factors affecting collections and control strategies, assessing needs and setting priorities, and development and management of program components. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of science in preservation, conservation, analog and digital reformatting, life-cycle management of digital content, and the exhibition of rare materials. Both theoretical and practical approaches to library preservation will be explored, as will strategies for aligning a library’s preservation program with institutional goals and priorities. Participants will visit select libraries, preservation departments, and laboratories in the Los Angeles area and will hear from leading preservation practitioners.

Requirements: In their personal statement, applicants should provide a brief description of their library or preservation experience, the nature of their interest in this course, and specific topics or issues they would like to see addressed.

Jolanda Bufalini e recante il titolo 'La lotta infinita dei restauratori del libro licenziati per Natale' (pag. 13), rilevo quanto segue a) nell'articolo citato viene sommariamente frettolosamente ricostruita una serie di fatti e circostanze interne all'Istituto e si attribuisce alla responsabilità di questa Direzione, e quindi del MiBAC, il presunto licenziamento di alcuni, collaboratori a contratto; nell'articolo, infatti, è erroneamente asserito che l'Istituto avrebbe iniziato una 'operazione tabula rasa' e vengono confusamente riportati dati e circostanze che - sia per le espressioni usate che per le modalità di comunicazione al pubblico di fatti che possono essere quantomeno travisati - potrebbero comportare un danno ingiusto tanto per l'Istituto che per il MiBAC stesso; b) nell'articolo si asserisce che l'Istituto avrebbe agevolato, nell'affidamento di alcuni incarichi, il sig. Paolo Crisostorni e si richiede '...una maggiore distanza fra ruoli pubblici ed interessi di famiglia'; anche in questo caso la circostanza riportata non è veritiera, e si rinvia alla documentazione attestante l'attribuzione di tali incarichi sia presso la Biblioteca di Archeologia e Storia dell'Arte che presso l'Archivio di Stato di Roma

Punto b: nell'articolo non 'si asserisce che l'Istituto avrebbe agevolato', si solleva un problema di opportunità viste le funzioni dell'Icpal di 'consulenza, progettazione, verifica, collaudo' per i restauri che Archivi e biblioteche affidano anche a privati.

Cheryl Porter will discuss her recent work in Egypt, including her
management of a Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation (TIF) project to
survey Islamic manuscripts at the National Library and Archives of
Egypt and other cultural institutions in Cairo. Ms Porter will
discuss the goals of the TIF project, the development of the survey
instrument, and provide a status update on the project. Ms Porter
will also discuss recent efforts to address conservation training
and education in Egypt, particularly in light of recent political
events. The lecture will have broad appeal to conservators,
scholars of Islamic thought, and those interested in the current
political situation in Egypt and its effect on cultural
institutions.

The lecture will be held in the Peggy Dow Helmerich Auditorium of
the recently renovated Annie May Swift Hall, located next to the

Biography

Cheryl Porter has been Director of the Montefiascone Project, an
international program of conservation training and education
located in Montefiascone, Italy, since its inception in 1988.
After graduating from Camberwell College (University of the
Arts, London), Cheryl worked at the University College London
Paintings Analysis Unit, analyzing the use of pigments in
paintings and manuscripts. From 1992-2006, she worked as a
freelance conservator, mostly for universities and other
cultural institutions. Cheryl was Manager of Conservation and
Preservation at the Dar al-Kutub (National Library and Archives
of Egypt) and the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation from 2007-2010.
She has published many articles concerning color in manuscripts
and has lectured in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and
throughout Europe.

A jig guides a tool, whereas a fixture supports the workpiece – in this case is a bound book. Increasingly, much of a book conservator’s work involves working in-situ without disbinding a textblock. This fixture safely and securely supports the parts of the book not being worked on while treating pages. The idea for this fixture was originally developed by Raymond Jordan, Senior Book Conservator at Trinity College, Dublin (for an image of his version in use, see Preservation and Conservation in Small Libraries, ed. Hadgraft and Swift, 1994), with additional improvements by Chela Metzger, Conservator of Library Collections at Winterthur Museum, Delaware.

La tavola rotonda programmata a conclusione del Convegno internazionale 'Meeting on Cultural Heritage Pests' affronterà i temi 'Diagnosi e prevenzione' e 'Attuali possibilità di difesa'. Tale occasione, promossa e realizzata dal CPBC, centro di ricerca universitario, vuole quindi essere un momento di confronto aperto e onesto sulle problematiche attuali relative alla conservazione dei beni culturali. Di conseguenza, pur essendo svincolata da specifiche esigenze commerciali, considera la realtà operativa italiana ed è rivolta agli operatori di tutto il territorio nazionale, siano questi tecnici della disinfestazione, del restauro o dirigenti di strutture preposte alla conservazione.

La tavola rotonda prenderà avvio da interventi di ricercatori che, sulla base di dati sperimentali e conoscenze scientifiche, riassumeranno lo stato dell'arte a coloro che, operando come conservatori, affrontano concretamente i problemi connessi al degrado biotico.
Di seguito è previsto un momento di dibattito tra gli intervenuti per condividere risultati, dubbi e problemi sulle fondamentali necessità del settore.

Un attestato di partecipazione verrà rilasciato a coloro che ne faranno richiesta.

Bookconservation Sabine Fleischer
Term: One year (term may be extended)

The Book Conservation lab Sabine Fleischer is located in Nijmegen
(NL) and provides conservation treatment, preventive care and
consultancy for preservation for book collections. The conservation
lab works for public institutions such as libraries, for church and
monastery foundations and for private book collectors nationally and
internationally. The objects vary from bound manuscripts to printed
books, pamphlets, and albums.

The Book Conservator should have a Master's degree from a recognized
graduate conservation training program specialized in book
conservation. Pre-training in hand-bookbinding as well as
post-training experience and the willingness to learn Dutch is
highly desirable.

Other qualifications:

Ability to develop and implement treatments independently, as
well as a part of a team

Strong knowledge of historical bookbinding structures

Understanding of materials and techniques, theory and ethics of
book conservation and related materials

Excellent hand skills, attention to detail

Excellent interpersonal skills, as well as motivation and
enthusiasm

Ability to prioritise and organise work

Ability to set and meet deadlines

All work shall be performed in accordance with the Code of Ethics
from The European Confederation of Conservators' Organisations
(E.C.C.O.).

Salary commensurate with experience.
