There will be over 50 speakers from 28 different countries. During the entire conference experts on funding programmes will also be present.

Call for papers:

The program committee welcomes original contributions on the following example topics:

* Needs for research in everyday conservator´s work
* Needs for research in everyday librarian/archivist´s work
* Suggestions for improvement of European-wide research effort in the field of book and paper conservation
* Gaps between research results and their application in everyday practice of conservators.

Paper submission

Authors are invited to submit papers: preferably abstracts of about 2 pages in a 12-point font. All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should email their abstract to ercbookpaper@gmail.com. The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2010.

Panel Submission

Ideas of panels are solicited to examine innovative, controversial, or otherwise provocative issues of interest.

Process of Selection

The program committee will evaluate papers and suggested panels based on quality and relevance.

A preprint will be made, therefore a deadline is set on 31st of December 2010 for handing in the final papers.

The language will be English.

Registration for the conference opens on 1stAugust 2010.

IFLA Preservation and Conservation Section and The Rare Books and Manuscripts section will hold a satellite meeting in conjunction to the IFLA World Library and Information Conference 2010. The satellite conference will take place on August 16-18, 2010 (visits on the 16th) at Uppsala University, Uppsala, Sweden.
The theme for the satellite conference is: ”New techniques for old documents. Scientific examination methods in the service of preservation and book history".
Within this theme we welcome papers on scientific techniques such as DNA, infrared spectroscopy, imaging techniques and micro x-ray fluorescence. All these techniques may be used in conservation treatments and material bibliographic issues such as the determination of animals for leathers, provenance through DNA-analysis, measuring paper strength, examination of pigments and inks for palimpsests and other documents, and ICR - (Intelligent Character recognition) for the recognition of hand-written text.

The Sheridan Libraries’ Department of Conservation and Preservation is pleased to announce a one-year advanced fellowship in book and paper conservation. Funded by the Samuel H. Kress Foundation, the Kress Fellow will have a unique opportunity to work in an interdisciplinary conservation program which incorporates advanced book and paper conservation bench work, collaborations with the Homewood Museum, and with the department’s heritage science for conservation project. The Kress Fellow will have the opportunity to work on a wide array of rare books and manuscript materials from the Sheridan Libraries which includes the George Peabody Library, the Garrett Library Collection, and the collections at Homewood Museum. This unique environment will provide the Kress Fellow with a scope of interdisciplinary and inter-institutional engagement fundamental to professional effectiveness and growth.

Since its inception in 1974, the Department of Conservation and Preservation at Johns Hopkins has played a leadership role in providing both conservation educational opportunities and innovation in conservation practice. In addition to working on rare books and manuscripts from the rich collections, the Department is engaged in an active materials science research agenda for book and paper-based collections through its heritage science lab and in collaborations with the Homewood House museum, the Whiting School of Materials Science and Engineering, the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, as well as industry partners.

The Sheridan Libraries Kress Conservation Fellowship aims to broaden the experience of post-graduate-level fellow through practical training that introduces state of the art analytical techniques, advanced bench experience, collaboration with curators, and awareness of the historic and philosophical issues concerning the conservation of book and paper collections. The Fellow has have access to an extraordinary array of resources, including the Baltimore Museum of Art (adjacent to the Hopkins campus) and the renowned libraries and museums in the Baltimore/Washington area.

Deadlines:

June 15, 2010: Deadline for receipt of all application materials; incomplete applications will not be considered after this date.
July 1, 2010: Interview of selected candidates.
July 15, 2010: Notification of successful candidate
August 30, 2010: Program begins

Stipend: $25,000 year, includes benefits, health insurance, and $1,500 for travel to conference.

Eligibility: Completion of graduate-level training in conservation; additional courses in material sciences is desirable. Preference is given to those who have completed graduate-level training in conservation, but third year graduate students will also be considered.

Application Procedure: A complete application includes curriculum vitae, a one page single spaced statement summarizing the applicant's interests and intent in this fellowship and chosen specialization, official transcripts of undergraduate and graduate studies, and three letters of recommendation. Submission of a portfolio of conservation treatments including photo documentation, condition reports, and treatment reports is mandatory. All materials must be submitted in English and electronically.

Sono previsti interventi dell’Assessore regionale all’Istruzione formazione e cultura Roberto Molinaro, del Direttore dei corsi di restauro Alessandro Giacomello e del magistrato Pierfrancesco Ungari, consigliere dell’Ufficio legislativo del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali e magistrato del Tribunale Amministrativo Regionale dell’Umbria.



Il nome di Pierfrancesco Ungari è legato alla Commissione, di cui è stato presidente, incaricata di predisporre i testi dei decreti attuativi del Codice dei beni culturali e del paesaggio (Dlgs. 22 gennaio 2004, n. 42). Nel corso del suo intervento fornirà un quadro aggiornato circa la prossima emanazione dei decreti previsti dai commi 7,8 e 9 dell’art. 29 del Codice. Essi riguardano rispettivamente i profili di competenza dei restauratori, i criteri ed i livelli di qualità cui si adegua l'insegnamento del restauro ed infine le modalità di accreditamento delle scuole di alta formazione ed il relativo valore legale del titolo.

Scientists have recruited bugs to kill other insects and micro-organisms which infest art and cultural treasures, boosting conservation efforts in hot climates.

Biotechnology can unleash a bacillus to "explode the guts" of beetles which damage paintings, frescos, tapestries and sculptures, a gathering of scientists and curators in Venezuela will be told today.

Certain bugs, once harnessed, are cheap and effective defences against humidity and insects, said José-Luis Ramírez, director of the UN University's programme for biotechnology for Latin America and the Caribbean. "We can use the toxins produced by some bugs to counter other pests or fungus," he said. "You don't need sophisticated equipment to protect great works of heritage, all you need are bugs."

Scientists from Europe and Latin America will give biotechnology tips to curators at the 4th Cultural Heritage Conservation Forum in Venezuela's capital, Caracas. They say micro-organisms are cheaper, safer and effective alternatives to chemicals.

Biotechnology uses living organisms to mould products or processes to a specific use. Genetically modified food and some medical techniques have raised suspicion, but its use in heritage conservation has proved less controversial.

One of the conference stars will be Bacillus thuringiensis, a bacterium which forms toxin crystals harmless to humans but deadly to insects. When ingested, the toxin forms a pore in the insect's gut which results in swelling. "Eventually it makes their guts explode," said Ramírez.

The problem, however, is delivering the bacterium to insects burrowed deep into artworks. "We are still experimenting with how to get it into wood carvings," said the scientist.

Cultural treasures made of organic materials such as paper, canvas, wood and leather are especially prone to decay in warm and tropical countries because of insects, fungus and bacteria. Beetles and termites have ruined paintings in Italian churches, furniture in Mexico and tapestries in Bolivia.

In Italy, bugs which produce calcium carbonate, the material for marble, have been inserted into damaged sculptures to repair holes. The growths absorb the materials' original colours.

Sofía Borrego Alonso, of Cuba's national archive, will say how she protected books and manuscripts with plant-derived products instead of pricier, less effective chemical biocides harmful to human health.

The Islamic Manuscript Association is pleased to announce that the Fifth Islamic Manuscript Conference will be held at Christ's College, University of Cambridge, UK from 24-26 July 2009. It will be hosted by the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation and the Centre of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, University of Cambridge.

The Association invites submissions of papers for its annual conference on topics related to the care, management, and study of Islamic manuscripts. In 2009, the Conference will specifically address the issue of access to manuscripts. Improving access to manuscripts through digitisation and electronic ordering and delivery systems whilst ensuring their proper long-term preservation is fundamental to the successful future study of the Islamic heritage. Presently, technologies are available that have the potential to transform the way manuscripts are studied; however, the access these technologies can allow is counterbalanced by collection holders' concerns regarding their legal rights and the financial sustainability of their organisations. During the Fifth Islamic Manuscript Conference these vital issues will be discussed by our invited speakers and selected paper presenters.
Call for Papers

As in previous years, the Conference will be organised around the Association's four main interest groups: cataloguing, conservation, digitisation, and publishing and research. Papers on access naturally falling into these broad categories will be included in the relevant panels, so please make clear to which interest group your submission relates. We will also accept submissions related to topics that do not fall directly under the purviews of the interest groups. These may be papers about specific manuscript projects, library collections, research on a particular manuscript, etc. Please note that the total number of papers accepted will not exceed 25 and preference will be given to speakers who have not presented papers at the Association's previous conferences.

This invitation is open to members and non-members of the Association. The Conference will be bilingual in Arabic and English and submissions will be accepted in both languages. The title of your paper must be included in your submission. The deadline for submissions is 13 February 2009. Late proposals will not be considered. The duration of each conference paper is 30 minutes inclusive of ten minutes of questions and answers.

E’ con un omaggio all’intellettuale bustocco Este Milani, studioso e cultore di letteratura, arte e tradizioni locali, scomparso lo scorso aprile all’età di 93 anni, che si chiude la settimana di eventi proposti dall’associazione culturale “Educarte” in occasione dell’inaugurazione del ridotto “Luigi Pirandello”, piccolo spazio dedicato al “teatro di parola e di ricerca”, che ha sede all’interno dello storico teatro Sociale di Busto Arsizio.

Poesie giovanili 1941-1946”, edito da Nomos edizioni grazie all’interessamento del Comune di Busto Arsizio, del Rotary Club “La Malpensa” e della stessa Famiglia bustocca.
