Location: 6-month online facilitated course - Asynchronous study plus 11 live online webinars
This semester-equivalent course covers the issues and technologies needed to design, implement, and manage an effective preservation program for documents, books, photographs, other paper-based materials, as well as digital collections. Course topics include: an introduction to preservation; the deterioration of paper, film, and electronic media; the building and environment; collections care; reformatting (digital and analog) and conservation treatment; disaster planning; and building a preservation program.
Session assignments are completed on a weekly basis. The 11 live webinars explore each of the course topics in depth and encourage an exchange of ideas. A class forum guides students who wish to pursue additional readings and provides an additional venue for class discussion as well as a help line between webinars.
Who should attend?
This course is tailored to librarians, archivists, town clerks, curators, and collections or records managers who have (at least) part-time responsibility for preservation of historical or special collections or of primary research materials or who are interested in preservation training for professional development. The course covers the preservation of materials including: books, manuscripts, records, photographs, ephemera, maps, other paper-based or documentary formats, audiovisual materials, and digital collections.

Description: An introduction to the principles and practices of contemporary library preservation with an emphasis on building practical and well-balanced programs which promote the responsible stewardship of analog and digital collections. Topics to be covered include: the physical characteristics of library materials, factors affecting collections and control strategies, assessing needs and setting priorities, and development and management of program components. Special emphasis will be placed on the role of science in preservation, conservation, analog and digital reformatting, life-cycle management of digital content, and the exhibition of rare materials. Both theoretical and practical approaches to library preservation will be explored, as will strategies for aligning a library’s preservation program with institutional goals and priorities. Participants will visit select libraries, preservation departments, and laboratories in the Los Angeles area and will hear from leading preservation practitioners.
Requirements: In their personal statement, applicants should provide a brief description of their library or preservation experience, the nature of their interest in this course, and specific topics or issues they would like to see addressed.

Cheryl Porter will discuss her recent work in Egypt, including her
management of a Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation (TIF) project to
survey Islamic manuscripts at the National Library and Archives of
Egypt and other cultural institutions in Cairo. Ms Porter will
discuss the goals of the TIF project, the development of the survey
instrument, and provide a status update on the project. Ms Porter
will also discuss recent efforts to address conservation training
and education in Egypt, particularly in light of recent political
events. The lecture will have broad appeal to conservators,
scholars of Islamic thought, and those interested in the current
political situation in Egypt and its effect on cultural
institutions.
The lecture will be held in the Peggy Dow Helmerich Auditorium of
the recently renovated Annie May Swift Hall, located next to the
University Library. To learn more about the extraordinary

Biography
Cheryl Porter has been Director of the Montefiascone Project, an
international program of conservation training and education
located in Montefiascone, Italy, since its inception in 1988.
After graduating from Camberwell College (University of the
Arts, London), Cheryl worked at the University College London
Paintings Analysis Unit, analyzing the use of pigments in
paintings and manuscripts. From 1992-2006, she worked as a
freelance conservator, mostly for universities and other
cultural institutions. Cheryl was Manager of Conservation and
Preservation at the Dar al-Kutub (National Library and Archives
of Egypt) and the Thesaurus Islamicus Foundation from 2007-2010.
She has published many articles concerning color in manuscripts
and has lectured in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia and
throughout Europe.

La tavola rotonda programmata a conclusione del Convegno internazionale 'Meeting on Cultural Heritage Pests' affronterà i temi 'Diagnosi e prevenzione' e 'Attuali possibilità di difesa'. Tale occasione, promossa e realizzata dal CPBC, centro di ricerca universitario, vuole quindi essere un momento di confronto aperto e onesto sulle problematiche attuali relative alla conservazione dei beni culturali. Di conseguenza, pur essendo svincolata da specifiche esigenze commerciali, considera la realtà operativa italiana ed è rivolta agli operatori di tutto il territorio nazionale, siano questi tecnici della disinfestazione, del restauro o dirigenti di strutture preposte alla conservazione.
La tavola rotonda prenderà avvio da interventi di ricercatori che, sulla base di dati sperimentali e conoscenze scientifiche, riassumeranno lo stato dell'arte a coloro che, operando come conservatori, affrontano concretamente i problemi connessi al degrado biotico.
Di seguito è previsto un momento di dibattito tra gli intervenuti per condividere risultati, dubbi e problemi sulle fondamentali necessità del settore.
Un attestato di partecipazione verrà rilasciato a coloro che ne faranno richiesta.

Di conseguenza, pur essendo svincolata da specifiche esigenze commerciali, considera la realtà operativa italiana ed è rivolta agli operatori di tutto il territorio nazionale, siano questi tecnici della disinfestazione, del restauro o dirigenti di strutture preposte alla conservazione.
La tavola rotonda prenderà avvio da interventi di ricercatori che, sulla base di dati sperimentali e conoscenze scientifiche, riassumeranno lo stato dell'arte a coloro che, operando come conservatori, affrontano concretamente i problemi connessi al degrado biotico.
Di seguito è previsto un momento di dibattito tra gli intervenuti per condividere risultati, dubbi e problemi sulle fondamentali necessità del settore.

The Book Conservation lab Sabine Fleischer is located in Nijmegen
(NL) and provides conservation treatment, preventive care and
consultancy for preservation for book collections. The conservation
lab works for public institutions such as libraries, for church and

internationally. The objects vary from bound manuscripts to printed
books, pamphlets, and albums.
The Book Conservator should have a Master's degree from a recognized
graduate conservation training program specialized in book
conservation. Pre-training in hand-bookbinding as well as

Other qualifications:

Strong knowledge of historical bookbinding structures

IV Giornata Manoscritti Miniati
Il 25 maggio 2011 avrà luogo la IV edizione delle Giornate sui Manoscritti Miniati con un convegno dal titolo “Arte e scienza: dal manoscritto miniato al libro a stampa. Tipologie, tecniche, materiali. ”.

La giornata si pone come obiettivo il formare un ponte tra gli storici storici del libro e della miniatura e gli esperti nel campo della diagnostica, i quali illustreranno le possibilità di indagine concesse dalle moderne tecniche di analisi.
In quest’occasione si ritornerà nuovamente a Parma nella suggestiva Biblioteca Palatina del Palazzo della Pilotta, già ospite della prima edizione del convegno.

Vernici: dai materiali tradizionali alle resine a basso peso molecolare
Docente: Roberto Bestetti
Il restauro delle opere dorate, la doratura a solvente, con materiali acrilici, con Aquazol, interventi cromatici su foglia d’oro, i pigmenti micacei. I materiali tradizionali e le nuove resine a basso peso molecolare per la preparazioni di vernici. Il degrado delle resine, la loro rimozione. I colori da ritocco: studi sulla rimozione; preparazione artigianale degli stessi a base di resine stabili.
Nel pomeriggio: preparazione vernici, loro stesura, preparazione colori a base Laropal e Paraloid B72; doratura con materiali sintetici, gesso a solvente, bolo a solvente e doratura “a guazzo” a solvente.

Le tecniche diagnostiche per immagine
Docente: Davide Bussolari
L’incontro si propone di fornire ai partecipanti strumenti teorico pratici per consentire di elaborare una propria campagna diagnostica per immagini utilizzando normali apparecchiature. I partecipanti saranno quindi in grado di svolgere analisi in fluorescenza ultravioletta, riflettografia infrarossa, fotografia in luce radente, infrarosso a falsi colori eccetera.

Tradizione, innovazione e sperimentazione nelle tecniche e nei metodi di pulitura delle superfici policrome
Docente: Oriana Sartiani
Si affronterà il tema delle tecniche e dei metodi di pulitura tra tradizione “rivista e corretta”, innovazione e sperimentazione. Si spazierà dalla teoria alla pratica e si valuteranno vari sistemi di pulitura: sistemi acquosi, non acquosi e fisici; l’applicazione delle tecniche e l’interpretazione dei risultati: lettura critica e valutazione.
Nel pomeriggio si prepareranno delle formulazioni e seguirà l’applicazione su casi rappresentativi. I partecipanti sono invitati a portare opere pittoriche per le applicazioni pratiche.

Trattamenti strutturali e di pulitura ad umido di supporti cartacei
Docenti: Simonetta Iannuccelli, Clelia Isca, Silvia Sotgiu
L’alternatva ai comuni gel rigidi a base acquosa, “Gellano”: un nuovo prodotto a tutto tondo per interventi di pulitura, deacidificazione, ossidoriduzione e interventi strutturali su carte antiche e moderne.
Prove pratiche in itinere guideranno la scelta degli interventi da effettuare.

Il restauro dell’Arte Contemporanea
Docente: Antonio Rava
Verranno illustrati i risultati del restauro di opere contemporanee presentati a recenti convegni in USA; si confronteranno diverse tipologie di intervento e metodiche di applicazione di materiali diversi tenendo conto delle difficili condizioni dei materiali moderni.

Le operazioni di consolidamento strutturale dei dipinti su tela
Docente: Ezio Buzzegoli
Il corso svilupperà un’analisi critica degli interventi con tecniche tradizionali, analisi dei comportamenti dei materiali comunemente usati nelle operazioni di consolidamento e fermatura degli strati preparatori e pittorici e conseguenti approcci metodologici. Interventi di risanamento strutturale del supporto tessile. Nuovi materiali per il consolidamento del supporto tessile e utilizzo dei telai a tensione costante.

Le decorazioni architettoniche in stucco
Docente: Mariarosa Lanfranchi ,Alberto Felici
La tecnica esecutiva: le armature, gli impasti, gli strumenti di lavoro, per la costruzione dello stucco in rilievo ed accenni agli stili nelle diverse epoche. Il degrado: fenomeni ricorrenti responsabili del deterioramento delle opere in stucco. Le tecniche d’intervento: come si può intervenire sulle opere per fermare il degrado (consolidamento superficiale e in profondità; pulitura; integrazione di parti mancanti, ritocco pittorico).

Further education course held by Dr. René Larsen, Dorte Vestergaard Poulsen, Kathleen Muhlen Axelsson from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Conservation. The course is especially directed to training conservators-restorers, curators, archivists and librarians in managing and monitoring of collections of parchments as well as the assessment of their damage in environmental ageing conditions. Participants will be taught the macroscopic and microscopic examination (visual assessment) techniques used to assess the 'state of health' of parchment. The use the databases created by the IDAP, PDAP (Parchment Damage Assessment Programme), EWS (Early Warning System) and DUPDA (Digitised User-Friendly Parchment Damage Atlas) will be demonstrated. The participants will be provided with materials and guidelines for the laboratory experiments. The course language will be English. The deadline for application is one mounth before the course starts. The course fee plus accommodation (4 nights) is 640,00 € plus 10% VAT. The number of participants is restricted to 20.

La mostra si propone di far conoscere il patrimonio librario antico attraverso l'esposizione dei volumi più significativi, all'interno di un percorso più ampio che cercherà di approfondire altri aspetti legati al mondo del libro e dell'editoria: la produzione della carta, le tecniche e i materiali di rilegatura, le tipologie di realizzazione delle tavole illustrative, le pubblicazioni di musica sacra. L'iniziativa si terrà, ovviamente, presso la stessa Biblioteca Diocesana, in largo Cattedrale. Sarà inaugurata Sabato 9 Aprile per restare aperta fino a Domenica 17. In questa presentazione si riportano i primi risultati degli studi, in corso da alcuni anni, che prendono in considerazione alcuni di questi “nuovi” materiali e li confrontano con quelli tradizionali.
In occasione del prossimo Salone del Restauro di Ferrara, Cesmar7 presenta un intervento a più voci nell’ambito della conservazione di supporti cartacei antichi, illustrando alcune problematiche relative alla pulitura e al fenomeno del biodeterioramento. Nella prima parte saranno esposti i risultati relativi all’applicazione di gel rigidi polisaccaridici (Agar e Gellano) per il trattamento di pulitura di supporti cartacei antichi, ottenuti mediante indagini chimico-fisiche, volte alla verifica scientifica dell’idoneità dei gel nel trattamento di pulitura e della loro efficacia. Nella seconda parte si parlerà delle analisi microbiologiche che possono essere compiute sui gel utilizzati per le puliture, presentando alcuni casi studi effettuati nell’ambito del biodeterioramento di beni archivistici e librari. L’incontro terminerà presentando alcune osservazioni preliminari sull’uso del gel termoreversibile Pluoronic F127, sia nei trattamenti di pulitura, sia nelle analisi microbiologiche.

La ricerca della trasparenza nella carta ha radici profonde che vanno dalle carte impregnate di cera usate in Cina, già dal IX secolo, come supporto intermediario per realizzare una stampa a partire da un disegno, alle ricette di Cennino Cennini, nel Libro dell’Arte, in cui spiega come rendere trasparente una carta o una pergamena.
I risultati di queste ricerche, artigianali poi, dal 1850, industriali, prendono la forma di un supporto cartaceo conosciuto familiarmente con il nome di “carta da lucido” o piu’ semplicemente di “lucido” la cui caratteristica principale é la trasparenza parziale o la translucidità, che rende possibile il passaggio (trasmissione) della luce e delle immagini. Il lucido, generalmente usato come supporto intermediario, studio preparatorio, tappa di creazione o, piu’ raramente, come supporto definitivo di un’opera d’arte, permette di copiare, trasferire e corregge un disegno, un’idea o un progetto.
La carta da lucido é stata largamente usata da architetti, ingegneri, archeologi, geografi, gioiellieri, stilisti, artisti… che ci hanno lasciato un patrimonio culturale abbondante ed importante ma le cui condizioni di conservazione sono spesso precarie. Le ragioni di questa precarietà sono varie e vanno dallo statuto di questi documenti, spesso considerati come secondari a causa delle loro prima vocazione “utilitaria”, ai materiali constitutivi del supporto, dalla grande quantità di documenti prodotti al trattamento subito dalla cellulosa per ottenera la translucidità.
Oggi, la trasmissione e la divulgazione di questi documenti é diventata una priorità di varie istituzioni patrimoniali, questo solleva la problemática relativa allo stoccaggio, alla stabilizzazione ed alle condizioni di consultazione di questi disegni.
Antonio Mirabile
Antonio Mirabile é restauratore di arte e documenti su carta e consulente in conservazione preventiva del patrimonio culturale. Titolare di un diploma di restauro di libri disegni e stampe e di un Master in conservazione preventiva dell’Università Paris I – Sorbonne.
Antonio Mirabile vive in Francia dove é abilitato a lavorare per i beni dei Musées de France. Dal 1993 lavora, tra altre istituzioni nazionali, per la collezione di disegni di architettura del Museo Nazionale di Arte Moderna Centro Pompidou. Il suo interesse per le varie culture lo hanno portato a lavorare regolarmente per l’UNESCO in paesi come Mongolia, Yemen, Egitto, Uzbekistan, Brasile e altri. Antonio Mirabile é un membro attivo della comunità della conservazione in Francia ed all’estero attraverso gruppi di lavoro come INCCA, Scudo Azzurro et ICOM.
CHI SI RIVOLGE
Il corso si rivolge a restauratori con almeno tre anni di esperienza nel campo del restauro della carta e dotati di cassetta degli attrezzi personali, possibilmente provvisti di alcuni disegni su lucido (dimensioni inferiori a 45 X 60 cm), diversamente verrà assegnato un disegno su cui lavorare.

Articulate, organised and team-focused, you have worked on digital humanities projects before and handled text encoding. Perhaps most importantly, you have an interest in the history of material culture, plus the ideas and enthusiasm needed to get a new research centre off the ground.
This is one of the two positions currently offered by Ligatus, with the second one being a part time Research Assistant.

BACKGROUND
Armed conflicts world wide continue to involve deliberate or accidental damage to cultural heritage. Conflicts result in the weakening of governments and societies and endanger the core values that hold communities together. The protection and recovery of Cultural heritage can play a crucial role in rebuilding societies and in overcoming the sense of loss and displacement.
Notwithstanding, in times of conflict, any operation will be delayed as ensuring security and safety of people takes precedence. As a result, it is essential for the concerned professionals working in these areas to understand how and when to intervene to secure or recover cultural heritage while law enforcement, peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts are under way.
OBJECTIVES
• Explore the values associated with cultural heritage and the impact that conflict has on them
• Assess and manage risks to cultural heritage in conflict situations
• Secure, salvage and stabilize a variety of cultural materials
• Take peacetime preparatory action to improve response in times of conflict
• Critically examine the applicability of international legal instruments, and of conservation ethics and principles in times of conflict
• Communicate successfully with the various actors involved, and work in teams
METHODOLOGY
The course will comprise of interactive lectures, group activities, practical sessions, simulations, site visits and case studies. Participants will be asked to develop case studies drawing from their own experience and work context.
PARTICIPANTS
The course is aimed at those who are actively involved in the protection of cultural heritage within a variety of institutions (libraries, museums, archives, sites, departments of antiquities or archaeology, religious and community centres, etc.). It is also aimed at professionals from humanitarian and cultural aid organizations, as well as military, civilian and civil defense personnel. Those with experience in conflict situations are particularly encouraged to apply. A maximum of 22 participants will be selected.

BACKGROUND
Armed conflicts world wide continue to involve deliberate or accidental damage to cultural heritage. Conflicts result in the weakening of governments and societies and endanger the core values that hold communities together. The protection and recovery of Cultural heritage can play a crucial role in rebuilding societies and in overcoming the sense of loss and displacement.
Notwithstanding, in times of conflict, any operation will be delayed as ensuring security and safety of people takes precedence. As a result, it is essential for the concerned professionals working in these areas to understand how and when to intervene to secure or recover cultural heritage while law enforcement, peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts are under way.
OBJECTIVES
• Explore the values associated with cultural heritage and the impact that conflict has on them
• Assess and manage risks to cultural heritage in conflict situations
• Secure, salvage and stabilize a variety of cultural materials
• Take peacetime preparatory action to improve response in times of conflict
• Critically examine the applicability of international legal instruments, and of conservation ethics and principles in times of conflict
• Communicate successfully with the various actors involved, and work in teams
METHODOLOGY
The course will comprise of interactive lectures, group activities, practical sessions, simulations, site visits and case studies. Participants will be asked to develop case studies drawing from their own experience and work context.
PARTICIPANTS
The course is aimed at those who are actively involved in the protection of cultural heritage within a variety of institutions (libraries, museums, archives, sites, departments of antiquities or archaeology, religious and community centres, etc.). It is also aimed at professionals from humanitarian and cultural aid organizations, as well as military, civilian and civil defense personnel. Those with experience in conflict situations are particularly encouraged to apply. A maximum of 22 participants will be selected.

Collezionare santini
Ecco un articolo pieno di buon senso di un collezionista...
Conviene restaurare le immaginette?
Ho già affrontato, qualche tempo fa, l'argomento restauro delle immaginette. Ci ritorno, a seguito di alcune mail che mi sono arrivate da parte di alcuni amici collezionisti, i quali mi chiedono consigli su come restaurare le immaginette, e che resteranno probabilmente delusi, leggendo questo post.
Innanzitutto, mi preme avvertire che, non essendo un restauratore, ancor meno specializzato nel restauro di documenti, libri e/o supporti cartacei antichi, non mi sento di dare consigli a nessuno su come si esegue un restauro. So che molti s'improvvisano restauratori, attraverso interventi fai da te, che lasciano il tempo che trovano, ma personalmente sono contrario a dare “ricette” o metodi stile “fatto in casa”, che possono avere conseguenze negative sul pezzo in questione.
Detto questo, mi chiedo – e lo chiedo anche agli amici che seguono il sito – se sia veramente necessario, oltreché opportuno, restaurare i pezzi “rovinati” della nostra collezione.

include: Dry cleaning, filling of losses, mending tears and
flattening. The storing and housing of parchment objects will
complete the course. The course is aimed at conservators and

Limp bindings over a long period of time have not obtained the
adequate attention of researchers in bookbinding. This was
probably due to the lack of gilding and decoration. If at all,
limp bindings were reported as interim bindings. There exists,
however, a huge variety of flexible bindings with very
interesting features. The course is composed of lectures with
double slide projection based on the research of Prof. Janos A.
Szirmai and hands-on practical work. Each participant will do
five to six limp vellum bindings with different types of sewing,
such as tacketing, long stitch and kettle stitch and with
various types of flaps and closures. This course is aimed at
bookbinders, conservators or others with equivalent knowledge.
Price: CHF 1'050.00 (Material costs depending on usage)

The Fitzwilliam Museum houses the principal collections of art and
antiquities of the University of Cambridge, and holds over half a
million objects in its care. The Department of Manuscripts and
Printed Books (MSSPB) preserves the finest museum collection of
illuminated manuscripts in the world outside the Vatican Museum, one
of the most important collections of manuscript and printed music in
this country, fine printed books, literary autographs and
correspondence. It is also responsible for the Museum's archives.
The collections total upwards of 132,500 objects: 1,000 illuminated
manuscripts and leaves; 1,500 music volumes; 20,000 rare printed
books, over 80,000 literary autographs and correspondence. There are
over 30,000 items in the Museum's archives. The Conservator of
Manuscripts and Printed Books participates in the Museum wide
Collections Care Programme.This post is part of the Conservation
Division, led by the Assistant Director, Conservation.
There is a special link with Trinity College library and the college
provides funding for the Museum to undertake work for Trinity
Library.
The successful candidate would undertake the technical examination,
analysis, research, interventive and preventive conservation of
works on parchment and paper, for the Department of MSSPB, including
medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, fine printed books
dating from 15th to the 21st century, manuscript and printed music,
literary autographs and archival material.
Management of the conservation studio will be part of this role as

The Fitzwilliam Museum houses the principal collections of art and
antiquities of the University of Cambridge, and holds over half a
million objects in its care. The Department of Manuscripts and
Printed Books (MSSPB) preserves the finest museum collection of
illuminated manuscripts in the world outside the Vatican Museum, one
of the most important collections of manuscript and printed music in
this country, fine printed books, literary autographs and
correspondence. It is also responsible for the Museum's archives.
The collections total upwards of 132,500 objects: 1,000 illuminated
manuscripts and leaves; 1,500 music volumes; 20,000 rare printed
books, over 80,000 literary autographs and correspondence. There are
over 30,000 items in the Museum's archives. The Conservator of
Manuscripts and Printed Books participates in the Museum wide
Collections Care Programme.This post is part of the Conservation
Division, led by the Assistant Director, Conservation.
There is a special link with Trinity College library and the college
provides funding for the Museum to undertake work for Trinity
Library.
The successful candidate would undertake the technical examination,
analysis, research, interventive and preventive conservation of
works on parchment and paper, for the Department of MSSPB, including
medieval and Renaissance illuminated manuscripts, fine printed books
dating from 15th to the 21st century, manuscript and printed music,
literary autographs and archival material.
Management of the conservation studio will be part of this role as

Un incontro-laboratorio per conoscere in che stato sono e soprattutto come si restaurano i libri antichi. È questo il senso dell'appuntamento, in programma lunedì 15 novembre, alle 19.00, presso le Officine Culturali di Largo Gramsci 7, a Bitonto.
Nel corso dell'incontro, Valentina Terlizzi e Giuseppe De Filippis presenteranno il volume “Conservazione preventiva nelle biblioteche di Puglia”, lavoro conclusivo di un progetto finanziato, nel 2008, dalla Regione Puglia tramite il concorso “Principi Attivi” e realizzato dall'associazione “Folio”.
Il progetto, svolto in collaborazione con le biblioteche e gli archivi pugliesi, ha permesso di realizzare un monitoraggio ambientale delle biblioteche coinvolte, di Bari, Lecce e Brindisi, per conoscere le condizioni ambientali in cui sono conservati i volumi. Successivamente, grazie alla collaborazione con il laboratorio di restauro Codex, sono stati restaurati 6 volumi manoscritti e a stampa.
Durante l'incontro alle Officine Culturali, saranno presentati i quattro documenti bitontini restaurati: il libro delle obbligazioni, con carte manoscritte datate fra il 1641 e il 1788, il brano manoscritto della visita pastorale di Mons. Musso, datato 1565, entrambi conservati nell'Archivio Diocesano “A. Marena”, che, per gentile concessione, potranno essere visionato, e i Frammenti di scrittura di Notai Helia e Morea, datati 1578 e 1626, conservati nella Biblioteca Comunale “E. Rogadeo” di Bitonto.
All'incontro parteciperà, insieme ai curatori del progetto, l'assessore alla Cultura del Comune di Bitonto, Elisabetta Tonon. Al termine della serata, sarà distribuita gratuitamente una copia del volume “Conservazione preventiva nelle biblioteche di Puglia”.

L’incontro si propone di definire le problematiche inerenti la conservazione e l’archiviazione di
materiale fotografico. Per questo verranno percorse la storia dei materiali e delle tecniche
fotografiche, e le cause del deterioramento del materiale fotografico: alterazioni chimiche,
meccaniche e biologiche.
Verranno quindi illustrati i materiali ed i prodotti necessari per l’archiviazione delle fotografie,
con una particolare attenzione verso le regole per una corretta manipolazione, necessaria per
ridurre al minimo i rischi di danneggiamento insiti nel processo di archiviazione di materiale
delicato o particolarmente degradato.
Verranno anche illustrate le attuali normative ed i requisiti per la conservazione.

Si tratta di un evento che non ha precedenti nella storia delle Biblioteche della Provincia di Genova e della Liguria in generale.
La Biblioteca Provinciale dei Cappuccini della Liguria, infatti, è nota non solo per la preziosità ma anche per la quantità e varietà dei beni librari posseduti.
Solo l’amorevole cura, la tenace dedizione, l’instancabile operosità con cui i frati, da secoli, custodiscono e arricchiscono le loro biblioteche conventuali, hanno permesso che questo immenso patrimonio culturale si salvasse e non si disperdesse.
Con la realizzazione di questo importante evento è possibile oggi ammirare ciò che per secoli è rimasto protetto e celato tra le mura dei conventi.

Il corso è concepito specificamente per rispondere alle esigenze di bibliotecari e archivisti, che devono far fronte alle problematiche più comuni di archiviazione, protezione e conservazione di materiali editoriali moderni (nella fattispecie brossure, cucite e/o incollate) e dei loro allegati (lettere, fogli sciolti, buste...).
Il materiale cartaceo moderno presenta infatti problematiche molto diverse da quello antico, essendo per la maggior parte di pessima qualità, e dunque molto deteriorato o comunque facilmente degradabile.
È previsto lo studio dei singoli problemi e la realizzazione di prototipi per diverse tipologie di soluzioni. L'obiettivo è quello di mettere gli operatori in grado di realizzare autonomamente delle semplici rilegature senza adesivi e dei contenitori protettivi per il materiale presente presso le collezioni e le biblioteche, con mezzi elementari, costi ridotti e tempi brevi.
Durante le lezioni verranno dimostrati in laboratorio tutti i passaggi della lavorazione, poi ripetuti dai corsisti che realizzeranno i propri modelli

Ciclo di 4 incontri a cadenza settimanale, con orario 9,30-17,30 (un'ora di pausa pranzo).

Ciascun partecipante deve portare con sé i libri su cui intende esercitarsi, oltre ad eventuali materiali particolari che fossero necessari per realizzare i propri progetti.
È richiesta l'iscrizione all'Associazione (25 EUR).
Il corso è a numero chiuso: per le iscrizioni dell'ultimo momento non è garantita la disponibilità di posti. L'ordine di iscrizione definitivo sarà determinato dall'ordine di pagamento.

Per partecipare è indispensabile aver formalizzato l'iscrizione entro i termini previsti.
La quota di adesione al ciclo di 4 incontri (28 ore totali) è di 420 EUR, compreso il materiale di consumo (carta, cartone, colla, tela) e l'uso di tutti gli attrezzi necessari che verranno forniti dall'organizzazione. Sono esclusi eventuali materiali particolari (pelle, pergamena, legno).
Ciascun partecipante deve portare con sé i libri su cui intende esercitarsi, oltre ad eventuali materiali particolari che fossero necessari per realizzare i propri progetti.
È richiesta l'iscrizione all'Associazione (25 EUR).
Il corso è a numero chiuso: per le iscrizioni dell'ultimo momento non è garantita la disponibilità di posti. L'ordine di iscrizione definitivo sarà determinato dall'ordine di pagamento.
Termine ultimo per l'iscrizione e il pagamento dell'intera quota: 20 novembre 2010.
DISDETTA - PER FAVORE LEGGERE ATTENTAMENTE
L'iscrizione deve essere annullata per iscritto.

UNO SCRIPTORIUM EN PLEIN AIR
in occasione delle Giornate Europee del
Patrimonio 2010 sarà organizzato, a Palermo, presso il Cortile dell'Antico Seminario dei
Chierici, Corso Vittorio Emanuele, 463, l'evento denominato UNO SCRIPTORIUM EN
PLEIN AIR, un percorso didattico ed interattivo che mostrerà le varie fasi di
produzione di un libro antico.
Il percorso è articolato in maniera tale da far comprendere al pubblico come
veniva prodotta la carta e la pergamena, come si realizzavano le miniature, la
scrittura e le legature ed infine verranno spiegate alcune delle metodologie di
restauro conservativo. Inoltre, tutto sarà completato con le visite guidate ai
fondi antichi dell'Archivio Storico Diocesano.
Le spiegazioni e le dimostrazioni verranno effettuate da volontari per la
maggior parte laureati in Conservazione e Restauro dei Beni Culturali e da
volontari laureati in altri corsi attinenti, e accomunati dalla stessa grande
passione per il mondo dei libri. Saranno presenti anche i calligrafi Enzo
Bongiorno e Francesca Mezzatesta i quali si occuperanno della sezione rivolta
alla Scrittura.

I’d never heard this term before, but Nicholson puts it in quotes, suggesting it is some kind of workman’s slang, or at least an uncommon term. In describing cloth case binding, and how to use a plough, he writes. “If the volumes are small, a number may be cut at the same time. This mode of cutting is called ‘steamboating’”. This was originally written in 1856. Perhaps it is emblematic of the 19th century preoccupation with steam power in general, and how a machine can influence even the terminology of hand work.

This program is designed for mid-career conservators. Instructor
approval is required for admittance into this course.
Course Description: A variety of different bleaching methods can be
used to treat discolored and stained paper. There are cases where
bleaching may be the only way to achieve an acceptable degree of
legibility or visibility of an artifact, or to restore an artist's
vision of a work on paper without the distraction of disfiguring
stains and discoloration. In this workshop conservators will learn a
variety of historical and contemporary bleaching methods and their
appropriate uses: light bleaching, hydrogen peroxide, calcium
hypochlorite, sodium borohydride, and borane tert-butylamine
complex. These methods will be reviewed in the context of existing
and current conservation theory, ethics, and practices. The course
will focus on practical applications of different bleaching
techniques and other non-bleaching options for stain reduction-both
localized and overall treatments. Participants will perform,
compare, and evaluate the techniques.

Course Description: After a day of chemistry fundamentals, lecture
and laboratory sessions will provide mid-career conservators with
both theoretical chemical mechanisms and practical experience
related to washing and de-acidifying paper artifacts. The course
will focus on the topics of pH, water purity, a comparison of
neutralizing and de-acidifying chemicals (with emphasis on calcium
hydroxide, magnesium, bicarbonate, and ammonium hydroxide); issues
associated with washing iron gall inks; anticipated results of
aqueous de-acidification methods, and discussion of non-aqueous and
mass de-acidification methods. Participants will get hands-on
experience washing and de-acidifying sample materials using a
