OIL ON PAPER: A COLLABORATIVE CONSERVATION CHALLENGE

Sometimes conservators encounter problems resulting from well-intended but ultimately flawed repair techniques.  One example of this is the formerly widespread practice of applying oil to the covers of books.  Once considered best practice in libraries, the application of oil-based leather dressing to leather book bindings was a widely accepted treatment method.  The idea was to keep the leather supple and prevent deterioration.

As was the case with many well-intended treatment methods, these leather “dressings” did not pass the test of time. In NLM collections, the oil ultimately absorbed not only into the leather, but also sometimes migrated into the paper pages and other adjacent porous materials.  In some cases this may be a result of overzealous application, but in other cases the oil is simply seeping through the leather cover and moving deeper into the book.

Ecco un progetto che coinvolge vari amici e amiche e l'università di Catania in cui noi Italiani collaboriamo alla conservazione dei fondi fotografici antichi Egiziani.

The International master Program in Conservation of Antique Photographs and Paper Heritage will start on March 19th at 4pm. The lectures will be held at the EICAP premises, Faculty of Fine Arts (Helwan University) in Zamalek.

 Egypt is the richest country in Africa and the Middle East for photographic treasures dating back from 1850. Egypt is also well known for its vast library collections, for the great part in public institutions such as the National Library Dar El Kutub, university libraries, museums etc. Public and private collections of antique photographs and books in Egypt are in a state of rapid deterioration due to environmental factors.

In order to address these issues, Catania University and Helwan University, in cooperation with Egyptian-Italian Center for the Conservation of Antique Photographs and Paper Heritage (acronym EICAP), propose a master in Conservation of Antique Photographs and Paper Heritage.

Library - Collections Care

This is a fixed-term post available for two years, provided as part of the University Library’s Treasures of the Brotherton project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Working under the direction of the Conservation Officer, you will support the development of the Library’s new Special Collections exhibition gallery, its exhibition programme and the associated training and volunteer opportunities.  In addition you will be responsible for the supervision of a trainee Conservation Technician.  You will devise and deliver other aspects of the project’s activity programme as appropriate (eg Conservation Masterclasses).  Following established conservation standards and procedures, you will assist the Special Collections Team in establishing a suitable balance between preservation and display requirements, and devise and oversee the implementation of appropriate preventive and interventive procedures to deliver the exhibitions programme.  You will also help deliver the Library’s broader Collections Care Strategy.

FIRENZE/BAGHDAD – In principio e’ l’amore per i libri, per il “sapere che resiste”. Dalla Biblioteca Nazionale di Firenze aiutata dagli “angeli del fango” venuti da tutto il mondo dopo l’alluvione del 1966 e’ partito “un ponte per” la Biblioteca Nazionale di Baghdad.

Le televisioni di tutto il mondo hanno trasmesso la devastazione fatta dall’Isis di siti archeologici millenari e opere d’arte di altissimo valore in Iraq, ma in questo stesso Paese c’è chi ricostruisce e protegge, silenziosamente ma tenacemente, lo straordinario patrimonio culturale iracheno. Da dieci anni l’associazione non governativa “Un Ponte Per” (www.unponteper.it) ha avviato il programma “Il Sapere che resiste”, sostenuto, nel corso del tempo, da un numero crescente di istituzioni, tra le quali l’Unesco, l’Unione Europea, il Ministero degli Esteri italiano, la Conferenza Episcopale Italiana (CEI), Regione Toscana,  Regione Lombardia e il Comune di Firenze."

Archives New Zealand has a new position available in the Preservation and Repository Services team for a Conservator.  We have a great opportunity for someone who is passionate about the preservation of New Zealand's history.  Archives New Zealand manages a broad scope in its Archives Holdings, including: art works, paper, audio visual and photograph collections. It has offices with repositories in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. The role is based in Wellington but the role will also provide preservation support for the regional offices.

We are seeking a person who has experience working as a conservator in a museum, archives or library environment to work in conjunction with our other Conservator, Audio Visual Specialist and Technicians to ensure our long-term preservation and access goals are achieved.

Disaster response and salvage

This intensive course focuses on preparing for disaster response and salvage. The course uses experience of responding to real incidents to demonstrate how planning can minimise the impact of emergencies in libraries and archives as well as outlining the practical steps to take when responding to situations. With reference to case studies, the course includes strategies for dealing with damage, an emergency decision-making exercise and a major incident desktop scenario. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

• Identify the key issues that a disaster plan needs to address
• Give examples of the decisions to be made when responding to an incident
• Source salvage equipment to build a disaster kit

Dust and dirt: Strategies for prevention and management

This training day will focus on understanding the nature of dust and the threat it poses, as well as means by which dust can be cleaned and how collections may be protected from it. • Practical knowledge of cleaning collections
• Awareness of health and safety issues
• The ability to identify pest and mould damage
• Details of various methods of protecting against dust

 Aggiornamenti da Cna Nazionale

In relazione ai numerosi e costanti solleciti, per il prolungamento dei tempi, pochi giorni fa abbiamo avuto l’incontro presso il MIBACT alla presenza del portavoce nazionale del coordinamento Restauratori Gian Oberto Gallieri.

Il Ministero si è detto convinto che in un massimo di 2 settimane verrà pubblicato il bando e che non ci saranno problemi nell’esaminare le domande entro il termine prefissato dalle Linee Guida.

E’ emerso però un problema, che era stato posto nel convegno della CNA di Roma lo scorso 16 febbraio e a Milano a quello promosso da CNA Lombardia il 18 dicembre 2014, ovvero che le specializzazioni previste dall’art.182 del Testo Unico dei Beni Culturali cosi come modificato nel luglio del 2013 sembrerebbero in contrasto con la Legislazione Europea, che prevede la qualifica di Restauratore e non i “settori di competenza”, cosa che per altro come CNA non abbiamo mai caldeggiato.

The studio has a busy schedule of work, carrying out interventive conservation treatments and providing advice on both library and archive materials for the eleven members of the Cambridge Colleges’ Conservation Consortium.

The position provides the opportunity to work on a wide range of materials from the earliest manuscripts to modern archives, and covers paper, parchment and binding conservation. Some experience of historical binding structures and the ability to carry out high quality interventive conservation work will be expected.

The successful applicant will have a degree or diploma in Archives or Library conservation, excellent practical skills and be looking for their first professional role to begin their conservation career. We are seeking an experienced paper conservator to work within our Paper Conservation team in support of Loans out and Tate St. Ives programme area. Day-to-day, you will concentrate on assessing, documenting and treating works of art within the Collection, supporting all related programme activity and working closely with the Conservation Manager and Senior Conservation Technician to plan activity and workload.

You will hold a recognised qualification in the Conservation of Works of Art on Paper and have demonstrable practical experience treating and stabilising a broad range of artworks. It is essential to have analytical & problem-solving skills, organisational & planning skills, and to be an effective communicator. You will need to accurately estimate treatment and framing requirements, work independently on conservation treatments and provide specialist advice for storage, packing, transport and installation of works of art. Frequent travel is required with this role and a flexible approach is required.

However, medieval and modern reading culture take different paths when it comes to books that are not in use. While both then and now the objects are commonly shelved after use, medieval readers had additional storing options: slipping the book into a box, bag or wrapper. Supported by an endowment established in 1981, The Huntington
annually offers a Mellon Internship in Conservation. The
internship, offered in the conservation of either books or works on
paper, is for individuals who have a Bachelor's degree and can
demonstrate a commitment to entering a graduate program in
conservation. The intern will work with the Preservation
Department's conservators, who will make use of The Huntington's
collections materials in providing instruction. Through training in
conservation treatment techniques and readings from the conservation
literature, the intern will advance their knowledge of the
underlying principals of conservation, and the tools and techniques
used in the conservation of library collections materials. The term
of the internship is three months. Mellon interns are encouraged to
document their work and make a short presentation to Huntington
staff upon completion of their internship term. Stipend amount: US
$5,000.

Salary: UKP31,640 - UKP35,840 pa. including Inner London Weighting

LMA is the largest local government archive repository in the United
Kingdom.  Based in Clerkenwell and administered by the City of
London, its holdings run to around 100km of documents from 1067 to
the present.  LMA holds local government and other records for the
Greater London area and the City of London.  These collections have
been awarded designated status by the Museums Libraries and Archives
Council.  LMA is an Accredited Archive Service.  LMA is recruiting
for two posts in connection with two grant funded projects fixed
term for 8 months and 12 months respectively.  The post holders will
be required to carry out conservation treatments based on up-to-date
techniques on the full range of formats present in the collections,
to package items appropriately, to communicate through a programme
of academic, professional and public engagement, and liaise
effectively with all members of staff in support of the project
work.  Applicants will have a recognised qualification in the fields
of paper, archive or book conservation or equivalent.  Experience of
working in an archive would be an advantage.  The post holder will
work to the Conservation Studio Manager.  The City of London
