Boxes for rolled items Tickets, Mon, 7 Mar 2016 at 09:00 |

Ebbene sì non abbiamo solo da imparare, brave Veronica e Claudia che andate a insegnare alla British Library !

 Workshop on scroll-boxes

Icon Book and Paper Group Scroll-box Workshop
The British Library Centre for Conservation
96 Euston Road
London NW1 2DB, UK
7-9 March 2016
9:30am - 5pm

Tutors: Claudia Benvestito and Veronica Zoppi

The Icon Book and Paper Group Co-operative Training Register is
delighted to present this workshop, generously hosted by the British
Library and supported by Conservation by Design.

This three day course will teach participants how to make a bespoke
box for rolled paper and parchment documents.  This multi-function
box not only provides safe housing for the document but also enables
it to be safely and easily accessed and displayed in-situ.

The box, with its slanting base, was originally designed to house
Ethiopian magic scrolls and is particularly well suited to housing
small vertically rolled documents on paper or parchment.  During the
workshop, modifications necessary to make the box suitable for
housing horizontally rolled documents will be discussed.  The
document is rolled onto two cylindrical concertina structures,
supporting it and allowing it to be scrolled up and down for
consultation or display.  No mounting strips are necessary but can
be added if desired.  Both options will be demonstrated and
discussed during the workshop.

Participants will each make one box, including the concertina
supports.  They will learn to measure and cut the board, paper and
cloth and will prepare cutting patterns in order to better
understand the box's structure.  The final box will be constructed
from pre-cut board.  In this way participants will take away both a
finished box and the board and cloth cutting patterns which can be
used for future reference.

There will be discussions and demonstrations of different housing
possibilities throughout the workshop.  Participants are encouraged
to bring objects for discussion and during the practical sessions
each participant will be given one object to house.

based at the Marciana National Library in Venice, Italy since

is GBP UKP265 for Icon members and GBP UKP290 for non-members,

‘Adhesives for Parchment Treatment’ | The Book & Paper Gathering

"Adhesives for Parchment Treatment’

A training day at the National Records of Scotland Conservation Services Branch with Antoinette Curtis and Yuki Russell

Author’s note: I am very grateful to Antoinette Curtis for generously offering to review the lines that follow. It is now a few weeks since Antoinette retired (congratulations!) and I feel so glad to have had the chance to benefit not only from the latest fruits of her smart research, but also from the example of the craftsman’s attitude with which that research has been pursued. I owe the same degree of gratitude to Head of Conservation Linda Ramsay and colleagues at the National Records of Scotland.

Following on from the success of the ARA training day on adhesives held at General Register House of the National Records of Scotland (NRS) on 5 November 2014, Antoinette Curtis and Yuki Russell, from the Norfolk Record Office (NRO), were invited to visit the Conservation Services Branch of the NRS to deliver a workshop on the principles, materials and techniques currently applied in the treatment of parchment at the NRO.

The workshop, as rich in theoretical information as in practical tips, took place on 18 March 2015 and included presentations and demonstrations on the properties and use of gelatine, isinglass, ZorbixSM and alum-tawed caecum, as well as an update on the Apocalypto Project."

Kenneth Spencer Research Library Blog » We’re gonna need a bigger box

"We’re gonna need a bigger box

Enclosures play a very important role in the preservation of library collections by protecting fragile items from dust and fluctuations in environmental conditions, and by enabling safe and easy handling of heavy, oversized, or awkward objects. Whenever possible, standard-sized prefabricated archival enclosures are used; shelving like containers with like makes efficient use of shelf space and contributes to ease of access and retrieval. However, in all libraries and archives, especially a large academic library with very diverse collections, there are always exceptional items that do not fit into standard enclosures, and that is where we in Conservation Services are called upon to create custom-made housings."

“To conserve or not to conserve, that is the question” | medievalbooks

"“TO CONSERVE OR NOT TO CONSERVE, THAT IS THE QUESTION”
DECEMBER 11, 2015 KARINSCHEPER LEAVE A COMMENT
From time to time this blog shows damaged manuscripts. One may be inclined to think that books are better off in pristine condition. However, Karin Scheper, conservator at the University Library Leiden, explains why it is sometimes better to leave a book be. Here is an intriguing guest post about useful disrepair and the upsides of damage. Enjoy! Erik Kwakkel"

A tale of twisting threads | Chester Beatty Conservation

Mentre noi siamo ancora a decidere se conservare o no i fili staccati ecco cosa succede alla Chester Beatty :

A tale of twisting threads | Chester Beatty Conservation: "

A tale of twisting threads

With this post, we’d like to take the opportunity to welcome our new intern, Cécilia Duminuco. As we mentioned back in May, our internship programme is celebrating its 10thyear, and we’re very happy that Cécilia has joined our team in this anniversary year. We hope you enjoy hearing about Cécilia’s work prior to joining the CBL Conservation team.
Before starting my internship at the Chester Beatty Library this November, I completed an MA research project at West Dean College, University of Sussex, in the U.K.
My research developed in collaboration with the Heritage section of the Maurits Sabbe Bibliotheek at the Catholic University of Leuven (Theology Faculty) in Belgium. I studied the sewing threads and sewing structures of twenty-four manuscripts and printed books from Western Europe, ranging from the 12th to the early 19th century, by means of two methods: visual assessments and Reflectance Transformation Imaging (RTI) with a Microdome, a digitisation tool created by the Catholic University of Leuven.

A Guide to Swell | jeff peachey

A Guide to Swell

by Jeff Peachey
In bookbinding, the term "swell" describes the thicker area of a book block at the spine due to the addition of sewing thread. It depends on factors detailed below, but a binder or conservator generally does not have control over all these variables. Knowing how to estimate the amount of swell that will develop is […]
