Bristol is a vibrant European city with culture embedded in everyday life. As a location, partnerships across the city enable an exciting cultural offer for the people of the city and visitors to the city. Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives (BMGA) is central to this cultural offer and is at the heart of Bristol's history, identity, global recognition and life.

BMGA is an ambitious, creative and innovate service, with the opening of its new museum ‘M Shed’ in 2011, and focus on developing Bristol Museum and Art Gallery and three other museums, the development of collections and enterprise, and delivering a vivid and exciting integrated public programme, there is no better time to join our team.

With the support of Arts Council England, as a Major Partner Museum, we are working to broaden our audiences across all our sites and provide excellence in all we do. With over 1 million visits to the service this year, our approach to audience development will be strengthened through the next phase of transformation. Our Designated collections will reach more people in exciting ways through research, interpretation, learning programmes and community engagement. Our business model will be developed further to support the diversity of activity and audiences, enterprise will be central to this.

The conservation team consists of two oil paintings conservators, a paper conservator (on leave), one preventive conservator and one part time objects conservator. A second object conservator is currently being recruited on a fixed term contract. Post holders report to various Senior Collections Officers. Conservation Studios are located at the Bristol Museum & Art Gallery. Paper conservators are expected to work across curatorial disciplines to ensure appropriate standards of care are provided as an Accredited service with Designated collections.

The Museum & Art Gallery collections are divided into nine curatorial sections (Public History, Industrial & Maritime History, World Cultures, Archaeology, Geology, Biology, Fine Art, Applied Art and Eastern Art). In addition to these collections (which are the largest in the South West and number over 1.75million items) the service has just taken on responsibility for the collections formerly of the British Empire & Commonwealth Museum. There are paper items across the majority of the collections including some 16,000 works on paper in the Fine Art collection. Members of the conservation department are involved in delivering the lively exhibition programme across several museum sites.

The successful candidate will be expected to have considerable existing museum conservation experience and expertise along with drive and ambition to promote their subject. The museum offers conservation services to external clients and this is an important element of the role. You will be required to assess and complete external work to agreed estimates.

Bristol Museums, Galleries & Archives Service supports Professional Accreditation for Conservator-Restorers (PACR). The successful candidate should be accredited or working towards achieving this.
