The National Records of Scotland (NRS) are seeking applications for
a part time permanent conservator, working 221/2 hours per week,
based in Edinburgh this appointment is permanent and pensionable.
Salary range offered is UKP25165 - UKP30267

As a key member of our Conservation Branch you will be involved in
all aspects of conservation and preservation of the archival
collections held by NRS. Duties include specialist practical
conservation work, guiding all preservation practices including
environment, storage, handling, exhibition loans and internal
display and able to provide specialist advice and information.

You must hold a degree in Conservation and or a relevant
postgraduate qualification. Accredited status is desirable or the
willingness to work towards achieving this. You must be able to
provide advice on the care of collections and objects, implement
preventative strategies in addition to core practical bench work.
You will have experience in identifying and disseminating relevant
analyses or specialist advice to other specialists and
non-specialists.

Position Description: Reporting to the Conservator,
Preservation/Conservation, the Assistant Conservator performs
treatment, coordinates various departmental activities, assists the
Conservator with lab organization and training, and provides

    Perform a wide range of conservation treatment on books,
    manuscripts, maps and other paper based materials.

    Assist with the evaluation of library materials, advise on
    selection of collection items for treatment.

    Perform single-item and collection care treatments, including
    full treatment documentation.

    Oversee the environmental monitoring program.

    Participate in all disaster prevention and recovery operations
    or other activities involving the protection and handling of
    collections.

    Assist the Conservator with the management of all library
    exhibitions and loans. Survey, document, treat and prepare
    materials for exhibit.

    Maintain and manage daily workflows, compile statistics, and
    train students and volunteers.

    Cultivate, initiate and participate in a variety of outreach
    activities relative to preservation, exhibitions, or other

Required Qualifications:

    Advanced book or paper conservation degree, certificate in book
    or paper conservation or related field, or equivalent
    conservation experience.

    Excellent oral and written communication skills.

    Experience in book and/or paper conservation treatment and a
    working knowledge of conservation theory and practice.

    Demonstrated organizational skills.

    Knowledge or understanding of artists materials, book structure,
    and book/print history.

    Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment where

The Department of Conservation and Scientific Research is looking to
recruit an enthusiastic and motivated paper Conservator for six
months for a funded project. The main purpose of the role is to
conserve drawings required for a forthcoming exhibition, opening in
February 2013. Under the guidance of senior conservators you will be
prioritising the conservation of prints and drawings, and
demonstrating a commitment to the conservation, care and
preservation of the Museum's collections.

You will possess a recognised professional qualification in paper
conservation together with demonstrable practical skills and an

Fine Art Conservation Group LLC is seeking to fill two permanent
positions immediately. The first position is for a full-time paper
conservator, and the second is for a full-time paintings
conservator.

Candidates must have a master's degree from a recognized art
conservation program and demonstrate the ability to work
independently. A minimum of five years working experience and prior
experience in the treatment of modern works of art is preferred.

Conservators will be responsible for the treatment of artwork
comprised of a variety of media, and the preparation of condition
reports and collection surveys.

Our studio specializes in the conservation of modern and
contemporary works of art including paintings, murals, and works on
paper. Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills and will
often need to collaborate on mixed media projects.

The studio is located in the gallery district of Chelsea, and the

Libraries and Museums at Johns Hopkins University is opening its
2013 Call for Proposals for its postdoctoral fellowship in Heritage
Science for Conservation. The two year postdoctoral fellowship
focuses on scientific research in support of book and paper

The postdoctoral fellowship includes an annual stipend of $56,000,
plus benefits, and modest support for research-related travel. The
Postdoctoral Fellow will report to the Assistant Research

and curators at the Sheridan Libraries and Museums. In addition to
primary research topics, the HSC postdoctoral fellow will
participate in lectures, symposia, and discussions and
collaborations with other scientists and conservators at Johns
Hopkins University as well as cultural heritage institutions in the
Baltimore/Washington area.

Eligibility: Candidates should have received a PhD in
science/engineering within the last five years. Candidates must be
familiar with relevant scientific instrumentation. A strong interest
in book and paper conservation is required and previous experience
in conservation or cultural artifacts is desirable. English-language

​Come and see what goes on in our conservation studio. Meet our conservators, watch them in action and find out about the painstaking work which ensures our archives are preserved for future generations.

The studio will be open on 20 November 2012 from 10am to 12 noon and 2pm to 4pm. As well as the programme of demonstrations below, there will be tables showing the different formats and materials found in archives.

If you have been following our work on the Great Parchment Book, this is an opportunity to come and see the repaired and rehoused pages and learn about the techniques used to humidify, tension dry and repair the parchment.

The timetable for the day is detailed below. It also includes a conservation clinic where a conservator will advise you on how to take care of your family archive, so bring your documents with you.

Position Summary:

The full-time Conservation Fellow will be responsible for treatment
of paper-based materials in preparation for exhibition. This project
will focus specifically on prints from the Special Collections
Department.

Duties and Responsibilities:

    Treat flat items on paper
    Preparation of treatment reports
    Work with librarians and conservators to prepare items for loan

Requirements: Student or recent graduate from a recognized art
conservation training program, with a specialization in paper
conservation. Excellent organizational and teamwork skills,
flexibility and collegiality. Excellent oral and written
communication skills, including demonstrated ability to document
treatments and prepare reports. The interviewed candidates will be
required to show a portfolio of both written and photographic
documentation of previous treatments. The candidate should legally
be able to work in the U.S.

Salary: This is a grant-funded position. Competitive salary

challenge grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to fund a new
senior conservator position in its Preservation Services Division.

The Mellon Foundation grant includes $1 million as a permanent
endowment and $250,000 to establish the new position while the
Libraries raises $1 million over three years to match the award,
which will generate funding to support the position permanently.

The Libraries has begun a nationwide search for the individual who
will take on the role of senior conservator in early 2013.

The Huntington Library seeks applicants for a Paper Conservator
position.  Reporting to the Head of Conservation, the Paper
Conservator is responsible for the physical care, preservation, and
conservation treatment of manuscripts, photographs, and works of art
on paper in the Huntington collections.

Responsibilities:  Examines, analyses, and performs both basic and
complex paper conservation treatments for a broad range of paper
based materials including printed material, unbound manuscripts,
photographs, works of art on paper, and parchment, in accordance
with AIC guidelines. Provides full written and photographic
documentation of treatments in accordance with AIC guidelines.
Prepares condition assessments, conducts surveys, and provides other
written reports as necessary. Working with other Huntington staff,
develops and implements preservation and treatment strategies at the
collection level. Participates in departmental activities such as
educational programs, emergency response, and environmental control.
Researches and recommends laboratory equipment and supplies and
assists in general organization, maintenance, and management of
conservation laboratory.  Works closely with the department head and
curatorial staff to set treatment priorities for paper based
objects.  Conducts or assists with workshops, seminars, and other
training.  May train and supervise interns and volunteers.

Qualifications and experience:  Master's degree with a focus in
paper conservation, plus five years professional experience in
conservation of paper based materials, working with rare and special
collections in an institutional setting.  Thorough knowledge of
conservation theory and practice, and materials science as it
applies paper based materials. Excellence in performing basic and
complex paper conservation treatments as demonstrated through a
portfolio.  Excellent communication and organizational skills;
demonstrated computer and related technology skills.  Evidence of
professional activity, most typically through membership and
participation in AIC.  Supervisory experience desirable.

Position Description: The Assistant Conservator position provides
practical experience in a busy academic library conservation lab
balancing treatment responsibilities with project management
responsibilities.  The Assistant Conservator will develop an
understanding of the functions and responsibilities of a research
library conservation lab working with special collections and
circulating collections materials.  There will be the opportunity to
develop skills in treatment decision making, and participate in the
management of a complex workflow. In addition, Northwestern's unique
holdings allow the possibility to gain experience in assessing a
variety of library and museum objects including paintings,
ethnographic objects, textiles, and realia.

Duties: Under the general supervision of the Conservation Librarian,
the Assistant Conservator provides support for a broad range of
conservation treatment initiatives for both general and special
collections.  The Assistant Conservator performs complex
conservation treatments and works closely with curators and subject
specialists on matters related to conservation treatment.  The
Assistant Conservator participates in and manages special projects
related to library strategic initiatives, including exhibits and
outreach, providing access to hidden collections, and caring for
Northwestern's most valuable collections of distinction. The
Assistant Conservator also participates in a wide variety of
Preservation Department initiatives aimed at increasing the useful
life of collections, including disaster response and environmental
monitoring.

Conservation Treatment: Under the direction of the Conservation
Librarian, performs conservation treatments on a wide range of
library and archival material, including rare and special library
materials. Performs complex treatment on general collection material
on a regular basis and participates in weekly roundtable discussions
of conservation treatments.  Provides full written and photographic
documentation in accordance with the AIC Code of Ethics and
Guidelines for Practice. Works with private conservators and
contract staff as needed for special projects.  Performs other
related duties as assigned.

Project Management: Develops and implements workflow for
conservation projects.  Coordinates the work of temporary and/or
full time support staff as needed.  Provides technical advice on the
housing, storage, handling and repair of both general and special
collections.  Advises library staff on conservation principles and
practices.

Departmental Responsibilities: Actively participates in disaster
response planning and recovery initiatives. Participates in
collection surveys and multi-divisional and multi-institutional
grant-funded projects. Assists with preventive programs such as
environmental monitoring and pest management as needed. Participates
in preservation education and outreach initiatives.

Professional Development: Stays current with new developments in the
field of library conservation; attends appropriate regional,
national and/or international meetings of conservation
professionals.

Qualifications

Required:  Master's degree from a recognized conservation training
program or related field.  One year of post-graduate work in a
library or museum conservation department.  Extensive knowledge of
current conservation principles and practices, materials science,
and the history of bookbinding.  Demonstrated ability to perform
high quality conservation treatments on general and special
collections materials, primarily book and paper.  Ability to
communicate effectively about treatment options and decisions.
Demonstrated management and supervisory skills and a strong service
orientation are also required. Applicants invited for an interview
will be asked to submit a portfolio of recent conservation
treatments.

Preferred:  Experience working with photographs and audiovisual
materials. Experience with paintings, objects and textiles
conservation.

Salary:  Annual salary of $45,000. Northwestern University offers a

monitoring, and the conservation treatment of both general and
