IADA Oslo 2017- REGISTER - Formstack

IADA Oslo 2017- REGISTER - Formstack: ""From Generation to Generation - Sharing Knowledge, Connecting People”

International Symposium
Oslo, Norway
May 3 – 5, 2017

In 2017 it will have been 60 years since the founding of IADA.
It was an initiative of the archives to found an association of paper conservators. On the occasion of the "Archivtechnische Woche in München" (Congress on Techniques for Archives in Munich), on February 28, 1957, conservators working in archives founded the AdA (Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Archivrestauratoren, association of archive conservators). Since 1967 the AdA has been known under the name "Internationale Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Archiv-, Bibliotheks- und Graphikrestauratoren", IADA.

The AdA, initially, focused on the following GOALS: a) Keeping up helpful bonds between conservators and their co-workers; b) promoting the new generation of conservators, guaranteeing continuing education on the conservators' side as well as supporting the exchange of experiences acquired; and c) representing the interests of the Group.
These goals are still valid and relevant 60 years later.
In Oslo, at the symposium "From Generation to Generation - Sharing Knowledge, Connecting People”, we would like to highlight the importance of preserving and publishing knowledge. In 60 years much has changed in the field. New technologies have been established and augmented traditional techniques. Since it is paramount for all to stay up-to-date, we will make sharing and preserving everything from the latest advances to the history of conservation the key topic at this symposium.
We hope you will join us and be part of this dynamic group of professionals.

A MID-16TH-CENTURY TACKETED PARCHMENT BINDING – The First Minute Book of the Commission of Sewers 1557-1606, London Metropolitan Archives, City of London | The Book

A MID-16TH-CENTURY TACKETED PARCHMENT BINDING – The First Minute Book of the Commission of Sewers 1557-1606, London Metropolitan Archives, City of London

by thebookandpapergathering
Introduction
In 2006, the London Metropolitan Archives, City of London (LMA), received a grant from the National Manuscript Conservation Trust for the conservation of the first minute book of the Commission of Sewers from Surrey and Kent, to make it accessible for researchers. The funding allowed for my employment to treat both textblock and binding structure, together with the provision of a bespoke clamshell box. The funding also enabled some research of other 16th- and 17th-century parchment-covered stationery bindings to assist the evaluation of a structure based on historical evidence, yet sympathetic to the requirements of the volume.

We would like to take this opportunity to show how knowledge and experience are shared and transferred from one generation to another, and highlight the importance of preserving and publishing knowledge. IADA welcomes proposals that cover, but are not confined to, the following topics:

·             Meeting places for book and paper conservators (conferences, new platforms, forums, Facebook pages, mailing lists…): where generations meet (or don’t meet) and creating new platforms to exchange.

·             Preserving knowledge: conducting interviews with former conservators, sharing their knowledge and experience, identifying the different schools of theory and practice across generations and countries and the milestones of our profession.
We also invite presentations on recent research, on-going projects and ideas for the future.

BAV - Vatican Library Preservation and Conservation of Japanese Archival Documents in the Vatican Library

Preservation and Conservation of Japanese Archival Documents in the Vatican Library
The Marega collection as a case study

Vatican Library, October 5th-6th, 2016

The Vatican Library houses the Marega collection, one of the biggest Japanese archive collections outside of Japan. A three-year project has been organized, by part of the Vatican Library in collaboration with a number Japanese cultural institutions (National Institutes for the Humanities of Japan; Ōita Prefectural Board of Education; Historiographical Institute, The University of Tokyo) to survey, conserve and to finally make this collection available to the scholars. An important stage of the project was developed by Japanese and Italian conservators working in a tight cooperation.

The purpose of this course - in collaboration with Toyota Foundation, Italian School of East Asian Studies and with the patronage of Università Pontificia Salesiana, Embassy of Japan to the Holy See and the Istituto Giapponese di Cultura (The Japan Foundation) - is to provide the participants with a general introduction to the Japanese archive materials, and to impart to them some of the theoretical and practical experiences accrued in the course of their conservation throughout the project.

The course is organized over two days: a first day of theory, followed by a second of practical activities, during which the participants will have the opportunity to treat original documents (Agenda). The lectures will be in Italian and Japanese; a written English translation of all lectures will be available. The practical sessions will be presented in Japanese with translation into both Italian and English.

The course is open strictly to paper conservators with working experience. Participation is necessarily limited to forty people for the first day (5th October) and to sixteen people for the second (6th October). Attendance to the first day is mandatory for those interested in attending the second day.

To apply, the candidates should send their applications, along with copy of their CV (in PDF), to workshop.marega@vatlib.it with their surname as subject within the 15th August 2016. The selection process will proceed on a rolling basis through evaluation of the candidate's experience until all available places have been assigned. Successful candidates will be notified from 5th September 2016; a waiting list will be published by the same date.

Attendance to the course is free of charge.

Il Progetto Marega della Biblioteca Vaticana

Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, 5 e 6 ottobre 2016

The Gathering’s Cabinet of Curiosities brings you the weird and wonderful from around the world of conservation and cultural heritage. Today we present you with ‘The Russian Soldier Book’. Dominic Riley writes:
I was in the Czech Republic in June 2013, giving a presentation on the conservation of cloth bindings for the Czech bookbinders, and following the conference a few of us had a quick trip to Vienna. We made a stop at the library in Horn, a beautiful ancient town in Lower Austria, which has a very good medieval library and, as many people will know, is a centre for conservation in Europe

The creation of a custom-made cradle to minimise risk during the digitisation process (F. Marzo) | The Book & Paper Gathering

"Introduction

In 2009, as part of the long-term digitisation strategy, the British Library digitised 250 early Greek manuscripts. This was the first phase of an ongoing externally-funded project to digitise the entire Greek manuscript collection. This was aimed at facilitating wider access to readers nationally and internationally and to help reduce the amount of physical and chemically-induced harm to their future preservation. The manuscripts chosen for digitisation ranged in condition from fair to good. All those in poor condition were excluded from digitisation and sent to be treated or put aside for later conservation.

The following short article describes the creation of a book cradle designed for the handling of manuscript during the digitisation process and provides instructions for its assembly."

Conservation of a caoutchouc botany book | The Book

"Conservation of a caoutchouc botany book

Elizabeth Twining (1805–1889) was a botanist and a botanic artist whose book Illustrations of the Natural Orders of Plants with Groups and Descriptions was printed in London in 1849 in folio. It is thought to rank among the finest lithographic flower books of the mid-nineteenth century.

Senate House Library, the central library of the University of London, holds the quarto edition of 1868. The two-volume set contains 160 colour plates on thick paper bound using caoutchouc, a latex adhesive sometimes known as gutta perche. This adhesive-only binding was pasted into a quarter goat case."

Boxes for rolled items Tickets, Mon, 7 Mar 2016 at 09:00 |

 Workshop on scroll-boxes

Icon Book and Paper Group Scroll-box Workshop
The British Library Centre for Conservation
96 Euston Road
London NW1 2DB, UK
7-9 March 2016
9:30am - 5pm

Tutors: Claudia Benvestito and Veronica Zoppi

The Icon Book and Paper Group Co-operative Training Register is
delighted to present this workshop, generously hosted by the British
Library and supported by Conservation by Design.

This three day course will teach participants how to make a bespoke
box for rolled paper and parchment documents.  This multi-function
box not only provides safe housing for the document but also enables
it to be safely and easily accessed and displayed in-situ.

The box, with its slanting base, was originally designed to house
Ethiopian magic scrolls and is particularly well suited to housing
small vertically rolled documents on paper or parchment.  During the
workshop, modifications necessary to make the box suitable for
housing horizontally rolled documents will be discussed.  The
document is rolled onto two cylindrical concertina structures,
supporting it and allowing it to be scrolled up and down for
consultation or display.  No mounting strips are necessary but can
be added if desired.  Both options will be demonstrated and
discussed during the workshop.

Participants will each make one box, including the concertina
supports.  They will learn to measure and cut the board, paper and
cloth and will prepare cutting patterns in order to better
understand the box's structure.  The final box will be constructed
from pre-cut board.  In this way participants will take away both a
finished box and the board and cloth cutting patterns which can be
used for future reference.

There will be discussions and demonstrations of different housing
possibilities throughout the workshop.  Participants are encouraged
to bring objects for discussion and during the practical sessions
each participant will be given one object to house.
