THE FIX: FLAWLESS FILLS WITH PAPER PULP

BY JOHN M. KEELING
On September 9-11th, Smithsonian Libraries hosted the workshop: “Using Pigment-toned Paper Pulp to Create Flawless Fills for Works of Art on Paper and Archival Material,” instructed by Margo McFarland-Rothschild, who has taught these techniques previously at the Campbell Center for Historic Preservation Studies and has her own conservation and consulting practice in the Chicago area. At Smithsonian Libraries’ Book Conservation Lab participants prepared and pigmented paper pulp to use in concert with wet suction casting techniques to directly fill losses in paper based artifacts.
Works on paper such as posters, drawings, or pages of a book can all be damaged in way that results in lost original material. For example, this damage can occur as holes contained within the page or as tears along its edges in which the corresponding pieces are lost from the main artifact. This type of damage is referred to as a “loss.”

There are few places where sticky goop made from fish meets mass spectrometry, other than in the conservation unit of a museum. The old and the new sit easily together, however, when in the hands of experts.
The conservation unit of the Chester Beatty Library is just such a place. It has some of the oldest documents in Europe and one of the world’s finest collections of Qur’ans. There are rare and precious objects, such as imperial robes from ancient China and surgical tools dating back a millennium.

Collation Modeling and Visualization: Video Tutorials |

Se riuscissimo a fare la documentazione così sarebbe un sogno ! Considerate che è un tutorial quindi è fattibile (per uno bravo)

Collation Modeling and Visualization: Video Tutorials

Over the past year or so, a group of us at SIMS and elsewhere have been developing a system for visualizing the physical collation of medieval manuscripts. At the moment, this consists of two things:
  1. Figures that illustrate the make-up of quires: number of leaves, whether leaves are missing or added, etc.
  2. Using digital images of manuscript pages to give an idea of how a quire would look, were it disbound: showing how folios that are disjunct in a bound manuscript relate to one another when the manuscript is unbound.
Here is a screenshot of what this looks like:
