International Conservation Services (ICS) has a vacancy for a Senior Paper Conservator located in our conservation workshops in Chatswood, a suburb of Sydney, Australia.
We require an experienced paper conservator to lead a small team of conservators in providing conservation services to clients in the private, corporate and government sectors. The Senior Paper Conservator is responsible for providing condition assessments, identifying appropriate conservation treatments and undertaking the conservation of a wide range of paper objects, in particular works of art on paper. The workload routinely also includes the conservation treatment of archival material, including maps and plans, photographs, books and wallpaper.
The Senior Paper Conservator is also responsible for leading staff of the Paper Conservation Team, scheduling team workload, liaising with clients, and managing the team's financial performance. In addition, they will also be involved in the broader development of the Conservation Division with opportunities for contributing to multi-disciplinary projects.
Demonstrable experience over a period of at least 7 years in the conservation of a range of paper objects is required. Particular expertise in the conservation of works of art on paper is preferred. A tertiary qualification in conservation with a specialisation in paper, or demonstrable equivalent on-the-job training, is also required. Professional membership of the AICCM (Australian Institute for Conservation of Cultural Material), or equivalent international affiliation, is expected for this role.
An interest in helping us to grow the size and scale of our paper conservation services, including development of our paper conservation team, would be beneficial.
Salary will be commensurate with experience in the range AUD$72,326 to $86,260 plus 9.25% superannuation. Australian citizenship or residency is preferred, but we will assist with obtaining a work visa if required.
International Conservation Services (ICS) is Australia's largest private conservation practice. We conserve a fascinating range of cultural and heritage objects and artefacts including paintings, furniture, textiles, paper, sculpture, archaeological artefacts and wall finishes in buildings. We also provide a range of consulting services relating to museum collections and architectural conservation. We currently have 25 staff working in Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne, with projects across Australia, and in the United Arab Emirates, New Zealand and Antarctica.

The Conservator's main functions are: to perform practical
conservation to ensure that the State Library's collection is in
good condition and accessible to clients; to undertake projects,
either as project team participant, leader or activity co-ordinator;
to conduct workshops, seminars and tours; and to produce project
reports and maintain hard copy and electronic records. The
Conservator undertakes projects to ensure agreed outcomes for the
Collection Preservation and Storage Branch, in line with the
Library's strategic plan.

The Collection Preservation and Storage Branch is part of the
Library Services Division which is responsible for all aspects of
the development, management and preservation of the State Library
collections. The Division also facilitates service delivery for, and
access to, the collections. Collection Preservation and Storage
develops and implements preservation policies and treatments for all
material formats in the Library's collections. The Branch undertakes
individual treatments and preparation of items for internal and
external exhibitions; as well as collection conservation,
maintaining client access to collections through their maintenance.
The Branch also contributes to the management of collection storage,
both onsite and offsite, particularly in relation to issues that
arise from collection growth.

Selection Criteria:

    Tertiary qualifications in materials conservation; or an
    appropriate qualification in a related field, together with two
    years' relevant conservation experience working under the
    supervision of an experienced, qualified conservator; or a
    minimum of five years' conservation experience working under the
    supervision of an experienced, qualified conservator.

    Demonstrated experience in materials conservation, conservation
    techniques, related scientific processes and the application of
    conservation ethics, as accepted by the Australian Institute for
    the Conservation of Cultural Materials.

    Well developed problem solving and organisation skills,
    including the ability to prioritise, meet deadlines and plan and
    coordinate projects.

    Well developed interpersonal, oral and written communication
    skills.

    Ability to work effectively either independently or as a member
    of a team.

    Demonstrated client service focus with a successful record in
    meeting client and business needs.

    Well developed knowledge of the practical application of work
    health and safety standards and safe work practices.

    Experience in preparing for and presenting workshops on
    conservation related information.

Comme chaque année depuis sept ans Christopher Clarkson, Nadine Dumain et Jacques Brejoux organisent un stage d'une semaine autour d'une initiation a la fabrication de papiers de restauration et de couvrure et aux techniques de reliure papier enseignées par Christopher Clarkson.
Ce stage bilingue, Anglais Français, s'adresse à des professionnels de la conservation ou a des relieurs confirmés.

Hand Made Cover Paper Workshop, 16th till 20st September 2013, Tutors: Christopher Clarkson and Jacques Brejoux. Venue: The Moulin du Verger Paper Mill at Puymoyen.

An exceptional opportunity to work with two leaders in their different fields and combine a five day stay in rural France with a period of research, training and testing the qualities of handmade cover papers required in book conservation for sympathetic & durable rebinding.

Using 19th & 20th century linen rags to make handmade papers, Jacques Brejoux will demonstrate the techniques of fibre identification, pulping, refining, sheet forming, couching, loft drying etc.

Using a reproduction a Stamper and Hollander machine for the pulp process. Jacques will share his knowledge & discuss the technical aspects of paper as they relate to book conservation.
