106 Archaeology of Bookbinding - Limp Bindings (Long and Kettle
Stitch Bindings)
March 14-18, 2011
(Course No. 106) (2), (3)
Instructor: Barbara Hassel
Language: German and English
Duration: 5 Days

Limp bindings over a long period of time have not obtained the
adequate attention of researchers in bookbinding. This was
probably due to the lack of gilding and decoration. If at all,
limp bindings were reported as interim bindings. There exists,
however, a huge variety of flexible bindings with very
interesting features. The course is composed of lectures with
double slide projection based on the research of Prof. Janos A.
Szirmai and hands-on practical work. Each participant will do
five to six limp vellum bindings with different types of sewing,
such as tacketing, long stitch and kettle stitch and with
various types of flaps and closures. This course is aimed at
bookbinders, conservators or others with equivalent knowledge.

Price: CHF 1'050.00 (Material costs depending on usage)
Admission Policy: Limited to 6 participants.

e-conservation magazine - Book Releases

Sembra interessante, se a qualcuno mancassero idee per un regalo di natale...

e-conservation magazine - Book Releases: "Books will Speak Plain
A Handbook for Identifying and Describing Historical Bindings

By Julia Miller

book-cover-2.jpg

Publisher: The Legacy Press
Publication date: 2010
Pages: 592, 374 illustrations
ISBN: 978-0-9797974-3-9
Language: English

The recent publication Books Will Speak Plain by book conservator Julia Miller is intended to give an overview of historical bindings that can assist conservators, librarians, curators and booksellers to correctly identify and describe historical books. On the long term, this study will help preserve and hopefully add to scarce information available on bookbinding style, structure and materials. Moreover, this guide will contribute to the correct appreciation of those less valued, common-looking bindings and their significance.

The book contains an extensive glossary of terms, guidelines for writing descriptions of bindings and is accompanied by a DVD with 1,471 searchable color images and captions.

In March 2008 the author received a Conservation Publication Fellowship from the Samuel H. Kress Foundation to write a book. The wonderful outcome -“Books Will Speak Plain”- is the result of many years of training, teaching, and an extensive experience and research on historical book collections.

bel modo di bloccare i nervi e i nastri al telaio: da provare...

the Nokey sewing frame « jeff peachey: "In European bookbinding the sewing frame or sewing press is an essential piece of equipment. The primary sewing–that which connects the quires of sections of a text-block– is the very foundation of binding, and I believe a well-consolidated, multi-quire text-block sewn onto bands can only be achieved by using a sewing frame.” Christopher Clarkson, ‘Thoughts on Sewing Frame Design for the Book Conservator’ in The Paper Conservator 19, 1995.
