Leads media-specific conservation laboratory which includes developing preservation policies, staffing, and budgeting. Manages and executes conservation treatments to preserve, protect, and guarantee the survival and future accessibility of artistic, cultural objects in accordance with an accepted, professional ethical code, such as the American Institute for Conservation’s Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Practice.
Reporting to the Chief Conservator of the Yale Center for British Art (YCBA), leads the Paper Conservation Laboratory, develops preservation policies, and undertakes conservation treatments for the YCBA’s rich collections of works on paper, rare books, manuscripts, photographs, and miniatures. This role provides a comprehensive conservation service for the permanent collection and supports the institution’s extensive exhibitions program, support, foster, and implements research, including for interdisciplinary projects, and teach University students at all levels through classes, lectures, and laboratory workshops. In concert with the Chief Conservator for the Yale University Art Gallery (YUAG), this individual also oversees the conservation of works on paper for the YUAG with a percentage of time allotted to this administrative process.

1. Works closely with the Chief Conservator to formulate, develop, and implement conservation and preservation treatments, programs, and policies. Represent the Conservation Department in the Chief Conservator’s absence.
2. Develops a long range philosophy and strategy for conservation treatment, collaborative research and teaching in all areas of the relevant collections in collaboration with staff.
3. Works with the Chief Conservator to coordinate collaborative research and analysis, implement treatments, create and maintain conservation documentation.
4. Manages a conservation department including planning budgets, supply and equipment inventory, coordinating contract work, and mediating any intra-departmental issues; pursues grants and other sources of funding.
5. Undertakes treatments and develops new methodologies for conservation and sustainable preservation; undertakes research in materials and techniques, including new methods of scientific research, disseminating research results through publications, presentations, conferences and workshops.
6. Identifies and diagnoses problems, approves conservation methods which ensure the safety of the objects. Assesses and approves alternative and/or modify conservation methods to achieve desired results.
7. Ensures accurate written and photographic documentation for conservation examinations, treatments and other activities. Leads research necessary to preserve collections and ensure deterioration of collections is monitored and controlled.
8. Advises on problems associated with environmental control, climate control, and light levels in storage and other areas of the museum or library.
9. Sets conservation priorities for collections and/or individual projects; for the care and physical well-being of collections. Assists in planning strategies for collection care.
10. Examines objects prior to acquisition and advises on authenticity and condition in collaboration with Chief Conservator, curators and other relevant experts.
11. Leads staff, visiting scholars, researchers and students in examination and conservation techniques.
12. Manages a staff of exempt and non-exempt employees and/or students to ensure that conservation standards are followed across the collection.
13. Oversees safe use and disposal of hazardous materials in accordance with current federal, state, and local regulations and policies.
14. Contributes to the field and profession through teaching, publishing, and presenting at national and international conferences.
15. May perform other duties as assigned.
Master’s Degree in Art, Museum and/or Library/Archives Conservation, Materials Science, or related field.
Five years of advanced conservation experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Proven skill in practical conservation methods related to works on paper and a working knowledge of examination and analytical research tools. Proven ability to perform successful treatments.
Demonstrated ability to lead others through strong supervisory and organizational skills. Ability to support, foster and encourage the personal development of departmental staff. Outstanding interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated ability to manage a conservation facility/laboratory, including workflow, treatment priorities, and to combine long-range planning and productive short-term management.
Proven skill in caring for a major collection and undertaking complex conservation procedures. Demonstrated knowledge of research, methods of conservation, and the history of artists’ materials and techniques.
Demonstrated ability to work with modern conservation documentation and materials.
1. 10 years of advanced conservation experience with specialized expertise in the conservation of works on paper.
2. Experience with British art and art history.
3. Current understanding of digital conservation technologies and documentation.
