Collation Modeling and Visualization: Video Tutorials

Over the past year or so, a group of us at SIMS and elsewhere have been developing a system for visualizing the physical collation of medieval manuscripts. At the moment, this consists of two things:

1. Figures that illustrate the make-up of quires: number of leaves, whether leaves are missing or added, etc.
2. Using digital images of manuscript pages to give an idea of how a quire would look, were it disbound: showing how folios that are disjunct in a bound manuscript relate to one another when the manuscript is unbound.

archives service the Houses of Parliament.  It is in the custody of

We are looking for two new posts--Collection Care Assistants--to
join the Collection Care team at the Parliamentary Archives.  These
are an exciting opportunity for anyone with a strong background in
arts, crafts and the conservation of heritage; and are interested in
a career in conservation and heritage.  You will work in a team of
five and, under the guidance of the Collection Care Manager and
conservators, you will support collection care activities for the
Parliamentary Archives and other conservation and collection care
teams across the Parliamentary estate.

The main focus of the role will be to provide technical support to
the two book and paper conservators, through a proactive and
reactive conservation and preservation treatment programme to the
Archive's collection of records.  You will also be supporting the
conservators on wider collection care activities that cover
preservation risk management, including: environmental monitoring;
handling and moving collections; disaster planning; exhibitions,
including assessments for suitability of loan and making cradles and
mounts; preparing material for digitisation; helping to review
solutions for storage; supervising volunteers; providing training
for placements and staff; helping to scope and discuss collection
care requirements with suppliers and other specialists; and
supporting the heritage strategy for Parliament, including
stakeholder engagement.

     Between the years 2006 and 2007, dr. Saad Eskander, who where the INLA (Iraq National Library and Archive) director until 2015, wrote a diary.

     This register portrayed not only the everyday life of the institution but also the impact of the Bagdad’s situation on it. But its not only that. It provides a rare and powerful register of how a highly degraded institution can be changed for the best. How cultural heritage must be conceived by authorities and even how can it have a very positive impact in the population.

     Saad Eskander provides here a highly transparent testimony. He speaks openly about lack of interest, corruption, bad habits… and a highly precise inside view from the functional aspects. We’re not used at all to see this kind of ethic attitude in authorities from cultural institutions, not in the so badly called third world countries or even in the peaceful and developed ones. This should be imitated globally.

My Collection Care: Rare books collection shelf mark and barcode problems

Rare books collection shelf mark and barcode problems

labels on rare collections (Books, Manuscripts, documents, photo albums ..etc) are glued on these objects and after some time it cause damage to the original  binding material this damages mostly is irreversible damages most of the time.

On this blog i will try to share my last few years experience thinking and trying to deal with those labels for the rare books collections, some methods was effective and safe, and some are not, as we always considering reversibility of any techniques we use on rare objects.

Rare books labelling in libraries

(A) A 18th century binding damaged with new archival label 

Labelling recommendation for modern and new archival materials (books, magazines ... etc) :

• For general collections acceptable acid free book labels are available from library suppliers.
• Alternatively, use a soft pencil if it is absolutely essential to label the inside of a book cover directly.

in fig(A) a 18 century binding is damaged by irreversible transparent tap that has been add to the spine joint with the upper and lower cover for keeping it's shelf mark label stable as possible (from the Liberian point of view).

after many times of use and handling, this transparent taps left causing a damage to the original leather.

Oggi, 1 luglio, parte per Katmandu la missione di sei tecnici, storici dell’arte e restauratori che sosterranno le autorità della Repubblica federale del Nepal «nella definizione e nell’adozione delle misure emergenziali per la preservazione e il recupero del patrimonio culturale danneggiato nel sisma del 25 aprile scorso», come si legge nel piano di lavoro del ministero di Franceschini.

E quando meno te l'aspetti ecco un post su una tecnica eccezionale. Sembra incredibile e oltretutto ha portato nuove informazioni sul Vangelo di San Cutberto (che non vi dico così vi leggete l'articolo).

A CT scan of the St Cuthbert Gospel – the earliest intact European book dating to the early eight century - has been published in a ground-breaking new book launched this week: The St Cuthbert Gospel: Studies on the Insular Manuscript of the Gospel of John, edited by Claire Breay, Head of Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Manuscripts at the British Library, and Bernard Meehan, Head of Research Collections and Keeper of Manuscripts at Trinity College, Dublin. Colleagues from Collection Care and Medieval Manuscripts took the pocket gospel to the Natural History Museum for CT analysis to understand the structure of the ancient gospel, which was found inside the coffin of St Cuthbert in 1104.

Sometimes conservators encounter problems resulting from well-intended but ultimately flawed repair techniques.  One example of this is the formerly widespread practice of applying oil to the covers of books.  Once considered best practice in libraries, the application of oil-based leather dressing to leather book bindings was a widely accepted treatment method.  The idea was to keep the leather supple and prevent deterioration.

As was the case with many well-intended treatment methods, these leather “dressings” did not pass the test of time. In NLM collections, the oil ultimately absorbed not only into the leather, but also sometimes migrated into the paper pages and other adjacent porous materials.  In some cases this may be a result of overzealous application, but in other cases the oil is simply seeping through the leather cover and moving deeper into the book.

Ecco un progetto che coinvolge vari amici e amiche e l'università di Catania in cui noi Italiani collaboriamo alla conservazione dei fondi fotografici antichi Egiziani.

The International master Program in Conservation of Antique Photographs and Paper Heritage will start on March 19th at 4pm. The lectures will be held at the EICAP premises, Faculty of Fine Arts (Helwan University) in Zamalek.

 Egypt is the richest country in Africa and the Middle East for photographic treasures dating back from 1850. Egypt is also well known for its vast library collections, for the great part in public institutions such as the National Library Dar El Kutub, university libraries, museums etc. Public and private collections of antique photographs and books in Egypt are in a state of rapid deterioration due to environmental factors.

In order to address these issues, Catania University and Helwan University, in cooperation with Egyptian-Italian Center for the Conservation of Antique Photographs and Paper Heritage (acronym EICAP), propose a master in Conservation of Antique Photographs and Paper Heritage.

Library - Collections Care

This is a fixed-term post available for two years, provided as part of the University Library’s Treasures of the Brotherton project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Working under the direction of the Conservation Officer, you will support the development of the Library’s new Special Collections exhibition gallery, its exhibition programme and the associated training and volunteer opportunities.  In addition you will be responsible for the supervision of a trainee Conservation Technician.  You will devise and deliver other aspects of the project’s activity programme as appropriate (eg Conservation Masterclasses).  Following established conservation standards and procedures, you will assist the Special Collections Team in establishing a suitable balance between preservation and display requirements, and devise and oversee the implementation of appropriate preventive and interventive procedures to deliver the exhibitions programme.  You will also help deliver the Library’s broader Collections Care Strategy.
